Have taken a nasty chip out of the edge of my pitching wedge. It has a sharp piece which catches on things.
Would it be within the rules for me to take a metal file to it just to tidy it up ?

If you damaged the club during a round - in the course of normal play - you can repair it during the round. Before or after a round, you can also repair it regardless of how it got damaged.

I'd suggest that filing off a burr or sharp edge merely counts as a repair so would fit either of the foregoing and would not cause the club to be non-conforming.

b. Wear and Alteration
A club that conforms with the Rules when new is deemed to conform after wear through normal use. Any part of a club that has been purposely altered is regarded as new and must, in its altered state, conform with the Rules.

Bit in bold is what would probably apply, technically speaking, but I would sincerely doubt that filling it down a little would cause you to breech any of the rules laid out in Appendix 2.

Go ahead with it and sort it out. A few swipes will probably do.

Any pics of the damage?

I'd suggest there is a big difference in meaning between purposely altering and carrying out a minor repair to smooth off the edges of a rough bit which will make no difference to the playing characteristics of the club. If it makes no such difference, it isn't altering.

Have taken a file to it. looks ok thanks for all the help.
What do you mean markgs not the Ryder cup all my matches are played to that standard :D
