Just got back from playing here. Whenever I've asked someone about Dale hill I always hear.... "The woosnam course is nice". Well I can say that I really enjoyed the old course and if I'm brutally honest, Hever is in for some stiff competition next year for my subs.

Yes the opening holes are a bit up and down, but the greens are fantastic. Fast, true and plenty of slop to them. Some of the holes are very picturesque.

Food in the bar was lovely and the juniors we were behind asked us to play through before we were even really up behind them.

I really can't be complimentary enough of the course, the people and the facilities.

Adam, have you played Nizels? I'm not familiar with any of the courses in your area although I thought Nizels on Tuesday was quite decent. I see it's not far from Hever so may be an option if you are considering a move?

Yeah I've played on once. It's less than than 10 minutes drive from my house.

It's a nice course, but it didn't blow me away. Which was weird as I played/scored really well that day. Ive been told numerous times it also suffers really badly in the winter... Especially the holes down by the railway line.

Maybe I should go back and give it another go.

I played the woosie once it was pretty good. I heard the other was shortish, up & down but in good nick. I'd look at it based on 2 distinct 18's.

It would depend on the club for me. Surprised you liked Nizels Gordon. It's a bit 'new' for you, but join there & you can play meyrick for free ;)

Used to work near Nizels and it does suffer during the winter, especially the bits you mention and any other bit that lies at the bottom of a hill, the last par 3 especially.
If you like scraping mud of your shoes and trolley, it's a must !

i would stay at Hever Adam.
Dale hill old is ok but the woosie is a bloody long walk .
as for Nizels yeh its not bad but does get pretty wet . i dont think you can improve much on Hever unless you join
East Sussex national.which is probably about £300 a year dearer.

Long time since I was based down that way, but that pretty much perfectly matches my thoughts!

ESN, while a step up, would seem to be too much of a hike. If you are really considering moving that far, Crowborough Beacons would be on my list! But Hever has always struck me as the best choice in that area.

Crowborough is a special course!! Top notch

Yeah not my normal choice of course but thought it was quite well laid out, every hole is quite different. It was in pretty good nick this week, greens were good but a tad slow.

Crowborough is a course ive heard lot of good things about.
Never played The Old Course at Dale Hill but have played the Woosnam every year for the last few, in fact i'm there two weeks today.
I played a match at East Sussex National recently and the member played with was not very pleased with the place, not really a members club, too many societies, preference given to green fees, poor club house, expensive food and drinks and dwindling membership, very low number for competitions. Nice courses, but not a good 'club'

I've no first hand knowledge, only word of mouth from a couple of people who say that beacon is a bit "snooty" .... Guess it's all perceptions though.

If you think Nizels gets muddy you should try ESN in the winter months! Personally I like ESN but it really is full of societies and corporate days. Of all those courses mentioned my mates and I love a day out at Hever.

I'm surprised you rated the Old course. Used to play it many years ago prior to the Woosnam course being built. They had to change a couple of holes to accommodate the new course which saw them putting a very nondescript par 3 in there. Not my cup of tea.
I find the Woosnam course a bit boring, especially on the back 9.
I was a member at Crowborough Beacon between 1986-2000 and unfortunately it's not a patch on what it used to be. Great scenery and a fantastic layout, but the condition has gone down over recent years. It can be a bit snobby.
Nizels is "ok" but I never play it well for some reason.
East Sussex National has never had a club feel about it.
If I wanted to join a club in the general area I would personally look at The Nevill.
Nice layout, always in good nick, and not too snobby

I played at Crowborough Beacon for the first time yesterday and I thought it was great. The greens were a bit slow, but I assumed this was down to the time of year and maintenance having been carried out recently or being due?

For layout and scenery, I actually preferred it to Tandridge which I know a lot of people hold in very high regard. The greens at Tandridge are of course perfect though, so would need to see Crowborough at its best to really conclude.

I would never want to be a member at Dale Hill, Nizels or Hever simply because they just all always seemed to be rammed full of visitors and societies. I don't have anything against either, but I love playing at a proper members club where the course is empty late in the day and you can just turn up at the club and play on a nice evening.
