Recently cut down my old Callaway Hawkeye 3-wood by roughly an inch, and to be honest it's been very consistant recently. Im not the tallest, just average (I think) around 5"10 but now i'm toying with the idea of doing the same with my Driver? Im not as consistant with it, like most people, but I feel like I have greater control now with my 3 wood. What is the general feeling about this?

yes cut it down.
have you read any of tom wishon's ideas, and seen what clubs used to be like, and what a lot of the pro's use
have heard bubba watson uses a 44" driver, and he hits a fairly good ball ;)
stock shafts are getting longer and lofts stronger.
have a chat with some club builders, they have intersting views

Funny this should be posted this week!

After a chat with the teaching pro at the club last weekend, i decided to get 1.5 inch taken off the butt of my G15 driver. Reason was to improve accuracy off the tee, find more fairways etc. Pete (assistant pro) reckoned that the length of stock shafts sold at present are far too long for the average amateur golfer, especially if they are only 5'7" like me. Most tour players have at least 1" off their drivers and wee Sergio has more than 2" off.

Initial results are positive as i've not noticed any great reduction in driving distance (normally 210-230yards) and yesterday i hit 8 out of 10 fairways compared to my normal 4-5. Result, hit 4 below my handicap just down to hitting more drives on to the short stuff rather than putting it in the junk.

Clive, as for just choking down on the original grip, it's all about the psychology of teeing it up a knowing that the club you are using is "made to measure" for you rather than just making do. Also, i believe that by choking down by that much can affect the weighting of the club slightly...who knows?

I've had my Superquad for about 4 years now (Bought from Ebay) and its the most consistent club in my bag, rarely goes badly wrong and more often than not I'm on the fairway. My only problem with it is I hit it high and don't get much forward roll after it lands. So i've experimented with a few other drivers the past couple of years looking for the extra distance which I achieved especially with the Ping I15(50yrds +)but never got the accuracy so I stuck with the quad. Anyway to make this post relevant I recently got it re-gripped for the first time and the Pro asked me where I got it from which made me think its a fake, but he said the club was genuine but was an inch shorter than standard which obviously contributed to the accuracy I've enjoyed. Just wish i could hit it further

I have an old Callaway X series driver that I put in the shed a while ago. I could never control the thing whenever I really went after a big drive which was mostly. Will be using that as an experimental shorter driver this month - just haven't decided how much to lop off the end yet! :D

Hope it gives similar results to those reported by others.

Went down the course today with the intention once choking down on the driver to see if it gave me any more control, sadly it was encouraging a hook!! Do you think if I took it to my local American Golf they could have a look at it properly cut it down? Dont really want to attempt it myself again.
