Im on a role tonight so here goes....my last post went a bit off topic.

You are playing a match and you are on a par 5 with a dogleg u hit your usual drive (no jokes) the one that finds the fairway) your playing partner deliberately plays to another fairway and because of this finds the hole one shot less than you do???

Has it happene to you?
Have you done it to someone else?

Is fair / sporting or not???

Discuss! :D

Like I said. Yes, it happened.

No, I didn't like it, but he still lost.

Before I get slated, I think if both players know the course, it's fine.

I think i very much understand your stance from my last post .....given your violent outburst       :p

I'm not sure that's cricket!

How about this one: You pull your tee on a long Par5 onto a parallel fairway. Instead of playing the ball back to the correct fairway immediately, you continue to play the ball back along the wrong fairway to a point where you know you'll have a clear shot to the green.

Is this allowed (in other words, playing and continuing to play on the wrong fairway)?

Some clubs stop this by putting in internal OOBs

Yep, we have this on our 4th. It's a medium par 4. Big hitters can go straight over the trees and it becomes a 280 yard par 3 (and 1/2).

As long as you're not OB then its fine. It's a game of how many, not how.

As above, If there is no internal oob then game on.coming in from the wrong fairway can bring in it's own problems too though, like hazards and yardage.... Though if you use a gps device that would help. ( I do not endorse this whatsoever )
Regarding continuing up the wrong hole, sometimes that necessary if you are tight to the trees of the bordering trouble between the holes.

We use to have an internal OOB on the 15th at our place. Its a par 5 and there is a ditch at about 280 that the big boys can easily get to in the summer with only a small sliver of fairway at that point. Some use to deliberately go back down 14 towards oncoming golfers as it shortens the hole a lot. Obviously that was inherently dangerous hence the internal OOB.

The only downside was a lot of other golfers would then hit a rare hook and as the OOB started about 150 yards from the 15th tee and in the rough to the left of the hole it really didn't take very much of a shot left to go out. Personally I am not a huge fan of these internal OOB's. We've removed our one now but players are under strict instructions not to deliberately go down the 14th and members are actively encouraged to report anyone doing so (on H&S grounds) and it isn't looked upon favourably. We are all capable of hitting a bad one and hooking it but there is a difference between a one off and aiming 30 degrees on left on the tee box.

I admit to doing this....funily enough my playing partner followed me :o

I would say that I would be very disappointed if someone did this deliberately.

As long as you're in bounds you can hit the ball anywhere you like on the course. Sometimes the wrong fairway can give you a better angle to the flag.

I really can't see the problem with it, if someone has the imagination to play shots from other fairways etc then fair play to them.

There is 2 holes on our course where it is partly advantageous to go to a different fairway to the correct one. I do off one of them regularly but on the other they have put internal OOB, even though I can carry it past the end of the OOB I dont do it there as it seems wrong

Seve built a career around playing the wrong fairways, very often deliberately :o ..........if its good enough for him.............................. :D
