I dare say this has been in covered extensively in the past, but here is a another.

I have just had my latest lesson and several things seem to have come to light, my swing speed has increased over the last year from around 60 to near to 80. I use graphite shafts and the pro suggested that I might want to now look at steel ones. I also feel that when trying to get the posture the pro wants that my shafts aren't long enough.

So what do you do? do you decide before hand the make of clubs you want or do you rely on the fitting to recommend the clubs that are best for you be they Titliest, TM, Ping, Orka, etc

I would go to an independent fitter and try as many as you can, ideally on some kind of launch monitor and then get the best make, model and shaft combination for your swing. Go in with an open mind and see what suits

Lou, aI agree with HJS. An independant fitter or a local pro with the technology available would be my choice. Did the pro who gave you lessons suggest you needed longer clubs ?

For the final fitting definitely get in with a good pro with a range of head and shaft options and a good launch monitor.

What I tend to do before that is also find a place that has a good range of demo clubs and then over a period of 2-3 weeks I'll hit them all, compare different shafts and heads more for look and feel. Which I think is just as important as the clubs performance.

That will help narrow it down to maybe 2-3 clubs you like. Then go get tested and fitted for those.

I don't think it's a straight choice between steel and graphite shafts. I ended up with graphite after getting fitted last year (having had steel shafts previously) but they're entirely different from the graphite shafts in my OH's clubs.

Speak to your pro about what he would suggest - you seem comfortable with him with your lessons.

You will be amazed how much difference a suited shaft makes , you might the feel of a club then the correct shaft goes in and bam , sweet as !!!! But it's good to have an idea what you mite like the look of and as has been said go with an open mind, see what performs best

I would where possible, try to avoid going to a retailer who has a strong relationship or incentive with a particular brand

I know one guy who went to a particular retailer, and the guy in the shop was practically trying to ram Wilson-Staff clubs down his throat.

Junior, Its me who feels I need longer clubs, when I get my posture right I feel I am above the ball unless I bend a lot more, I do know he is a fitter for the makes I mentioned in my first post.

I would also suggeste an clubmaker with an registering equipment, which measures spins, velocity, swing speed and so on with minor different weights adjustment.... so depending on your measurment will a good clubmaker choose right shafts and clubheads for you...

depends if you have a strong affiliation for (or against!) any brand(s) or a totally open mind.......
