Had a Mizuno fitting at New Malden today. I always suspected my shafts weren't right and this proved it beyond all doubt.

I've always had decent length with my woods but been pretty short with my irons. Well that's all about to change as my 6 iron is going from 155 yards (MP62's with DGR300 shafts) to 178 yards (JPX800 pro with Proj X rifle 5.5).

Superb session with Mark Yonwin at the National fitting centre.

I'll post the figures in a sec for anyone who's into geek data!! :D

Didn't record the details with the DNA optimiser, but average swing speed was around 85mph and recommended a light stiff shaft. I've asked Mark to email me the figures so I can post them.

So here's the results: (all 6 iron)

My clubs
MP62 (DGR300)
Swing speed: 93.5 mph
Backspin: 7227
Launch angle: 21.4
carry: 155.5
total: 155.5 (no roll-balloon flight)

demo club 1. (down 2.1 yds on my MP62's)
MP53 (XPS 300)
Swing speed: 89.6 mph
Backspin: 6810
launch angle: 20.9
carry: 152.3
total: 153.4

demo club 2. (improvement of 9.9 yds on my MP62's)
MP53 (Project X rifle 5.5)
Swing speed: 86.7 mph
Backspin: 5993
launch angle: 20.3
carry: 161.5
total: 165.4

demo club 3. (improvement of 12.6 yds on MP53 & 22.5 yds on MP62's)
JPX 800 pro (Project X rifle 5.5)
Swing speed: 87.3 mph
Backspin: 5575
launch angle: 19.1
carry: 172.6
total: 178.0

We then did some tape hits which showed I was hitting off the sole towards the heel.

Mark then bent the JPX's 1 degree stronger (will lower launch angle more and give even more distance) and 1 deg flat. I hit a few more balls into the range but without the monitor. The shape was superb...nice penetrating ball flight and loads of carry. Nice straight flight with the odd draw.

I promised myself I would be guided by the fitter and by the figures and wouldn't let ego get in the way. I always suspected my shafts werent right for me and this has proved it beyond all doubt.

I ordered them straight away from the American Golf shop at New Malden with Golf pride Red & black multi grips. Going for 5-PW as I'm going to keep my MP fli-hi's but get the shafts changed and loft & lies altered to match the JPX pro's. 5-PW came to £449.94

I'm a well happy bunny now and can't wait for the 2 weeks that they said it should take.

Anyone want to buy any MP62's, MX 200's and Nike Pro blades?? :D :D

Ooh! Any chance you will have them in time for Beau? Might be cutting it a bit fine. I feel I may need to ask for a cheeky swing with one to see if I need them in my life! :D

Did you not try DGS300 Rick?

I thought PX 5.5 were stiffer than S300, or is it the rifle's that are half a flex softer?

No it wasn't one of the shafts the DNA optimiser recommended. It actually recommended Proj X 5.0 but Mark wanted to bring the ball flight down more and also took into account that I was hitting my 6.0 driver shaft well.

Hope to get them in time, but I bet I don't. I think the JPX pro heads are in short supply.

Try Nevada Bobs for a wack...the one in Barnet Copthorne even has a 6 iron demo with a PX 5.5 shaft in it.

I was pretty blown away by them to be honest. I though i would end up getting MP53's but when I hit these, I knew straight away they were the ones.. :D

Great result Rick. Seems like you have a good combination of lowered spin and launch angle and a bit extra clubhead speed, all of which combines to give loads of distance. You are another player who finds TT DG gives too much spin, so the ball balloons. I agree with region - S300 would have been interesting too, but PX looks like a good fit and if you like the feel, gives a nice flight.

PX 5.5 is a shade stiffer than S300 (S300 being 5.8 on the Rifle scale and PX 5.5 being 6.0).

I got fitted at Mizuno a couple of weeks ago and am expexting my clubs to arrive today.

My swing speed with my 6 iron was 83 mph and I was hitting it 136 with my own club.I got fitted for S300 Super Light shafts(I had Rifle 6.0 and was told they were too stiff for me).I was hitting 145 with the Super Lights.

Got to say you are hitting it much further than me and I play off 4.

Nice result Rick..
Don't forget, though, that the 800 Pro 6 iron is already 2degrees stronger than your 62's and you had it de-lofter by another degree. That could mean 10-15 yards purely on loft.
Still a good result though
Enjoy - I know you will

I bought custom fit Titleist just before Xmas Rick and they actually only took 3 days to arrive and it was still the longest three days ever!

I hope you get yours as soon as possible and they do everything that you want them to.

Funny, I did a c/fit at New Malden and was a little disappointed with their service

Anyway, you will soon be down to scratch!

Chris

I had my fitting at New Malden on Saturday. Much as I want to buy Mizuno, I'm hanging back for the moment. As much as I want to trust Nick's (Mizuno man)fitting I have a little voice in my head telling me that it's not the right setup. I did come in straight off the back of an 18 hole round up hill and over dale, followed by a large bucket of balls on the range there. Consequently, I know that I wasn't swinging at my best. Two things are gnawing in my head:

1. We didn't use my own 6 iron for comparison.......in the euphoria of the moment I completely forgot to hit it on the computer. Therefore, we didn't prove that the clubs recommended are actually any improvement on my current ones - and the way I was hitting mine last night, I'm not sure they are.

2. The spec recommended came as a bit of a surprise, not only to myself, but to the fitters at Direct Golf and American Golf when I took them in for quotes, and my own instructor when I discussed it with him.

On the day my club head speed was way down slow. I have to attribute this partly to the fact I was just plain knackered and swinging slow, but also highly likely that my swing mechanics were all out of kilter. The fitting was good, and very interesting, and the results at the time showed that the club I was eventually recommended gave me an extra 15 yds or so over the first set up I tried. I initially had a high backspin and side spin coupled with slow club head speed. the various combinations knocked the backspin down by a third and the side spin by half, so the results looked good - but need to compare against my current irons.

The spec recommended switched me to 0.5 inch longer shafts, move to graphite from steel and 2 degrees flat. It's the switch to graphite that surprised both DG and AG, and the 2 degree flat that surprised my instructor. I discussed the club speed issue with my instructor too, and he reminded me what I regularly lapse back into that slows me down, and what I should be doing to increase it. Went out last night and did what I am supposed to do, immediately got an extra 20 - 30 yards on my 7 iron - hit one from 160 yds out to the back of the green on one hole when recently they were dropping and stopping about 120 - 130.

With all that in mind, I need to have another look at this before I make the sort of commitment needed to switch to Mizuno. I already have a pre-arranged session at a Ping demo day tomorrow (intentionally done as a comparison for the Mizuno), and I will then go to my local AG with my 6 iron as they have all the Mizuno setup there, and I'll have another try.

I still want to switch to shiny new Mizuno sticks, but I want to ensure that the setup is right and not one that will need adjusting in a couple of months when my swing mechanics are all working again..

Another set if clubs Rick.....

Just for a second I considered the Pro Blades! :o

Sounds like you have found a great set of clubs mate. Enjoy!! :)

Cheers for the heads up. Bit of a trek to try out a club though ;)

I might investigate and see if anywhere nearer has them as a demo club.
