I was reading up on custom fit clubs and came up with a couple of websites, cant remember one, the other was called www.forgan.com. On there they take measurements of your wrist to the floor, height etc and they then will sell you clubs that are custom fit to your size. Now I i'm not going to buy any (please dont shout at me homer i'm not selling anything!) but it says that my clubs need to 1/4" longer and have a thicker grip. Will 1/4" longer club really make that much difference (its abour 6 and 3/4 mm!)

Hey NQT I'm not going to shout. It is obvious that your post is more an observational one as opposed to blatant promotion and selling and the point of the forum is to be able to discuss this sort of thing.

The extra length may have a number of effects. It may allow you to hit the ball further with each club as basically your swing is 1/4 inch wider per club. That said there may be a negative which is that longer clubs are harder to control so if you already struggle with 4 and 5 irons this may make the problem worse.

A thicker grip may also cause problems in that it won't allow you to release fully through the ball in the same way as a grip that is too thing allows the wrists and arms to get too active.

I'd be wary of taking any custom fitting advice directly from a website and you would be better of going to a PGA qualified pro or at the very least the manager of and AG or similar (I never let one of the shop staff do it and insist on the manager as they are meant to have received training)

See, no rant, no shouting, just my humble opinion

This is impossible to do on line. Every golfer is different, and these dimensions are a starting point. Aside from physical dimensions, you can stand tall, hunch over, etc, it also depends on you knowing (mystically) which shaft and flex you need. Rubbish.

If you want c/f, and a lot don't, go see a c/f specialist, it is a real eye opener.

on-line custom made is a gimick that just by chance alone may work for some, but its simply that.....chance!

To get the most accurate set up for you requires, measurement, swing observation with each club covering every stance you take and every body position with every club, including the shoes you wear when you normally play and all SHOULD be done on grass.

You turn up in thick soled trainers to get fitted you are onto an error making starter already as you will automatically compensate for the extra 4 or 5 mm you are off the ground, you wear golf shoes and get tested on solid floor and again, you wont be accurate, close maybe but spot on? No!

The technology for custom made and fitted is superb, but unless it takes into account every aspect its not without its flaws. Having said that going to a shop that does this is 100% better than on-line in my view.

I bought a driver from a custom fit web site. Quite nice but no better than my existing driver.
I went to a club builder for my current driver. My driving is still crap. It is the numpty on the end that is the problem, not the club.

NQT.....1/4 of an inch is nothing. It's like saying..."ohh, you should see a huge improvement with a thicker grip".
Oh....that's also added!
Neither of these are much use. Neither of these are likely to be accurate, static online fitting is as good as useless i.m.h.o.
I've used irons in the following length specs

reg, reg, +1/2 (C_F), reg, +1/2 graphite. That's five sets in 16 years. No difference overall.

As for your hand size....Thick grips can feel good, but should only be recommended by a pro.

I'm pleased you're not buying....but I will look at the site, thanks for the link.

OK.....Have I been rick-rolled.

I don't know what this site is...but it's Forgan .co.uk

BEWARE ALL FORUM USERS......DO NOT CLICK ON THE LINK.

THANKS TO AN INCORRECT LINK POSTED HERE BY A FORUM USER, I NOW HAVE TO VISIT I.T. SUPPORT AT WORK to ask them to double check this site. If it's not illegal or immoral, it sure looks like it.

I'M GUTTED...... :D :D

I'm always a bit dubious about online fitting, especially as having used an online fitting recomendation as my starting point & then going into have a fitting for those clubs & getting a different result from the fitting proffesional is quite an eye-opener. I'd always get a proper club fitter do a full fitting for clubs.
