I'll try.

The CSS (competition scratch score) is similar to the SSS (standard scratch score) except that the CSS can be changed to reflect the scoring in a competition "on the day".

There will be plenty of definitions for SSS, probably best to look at the CONGU website.

Why a CSS? Well, depending on the conditions a course may be harder or easier than normal and if enough of the good players play better or worse than usual, then the CSS might be changed.

If it's a sunny day, easy flag positions, plenty of run etc. it is possible that the standard of nearly all players in the competition will be a bit better than normal. By changing the CSS, it means that players will have a fairer adjustment to their h'cap.

example.....

Course par 70, course SSS 70. If the best players all shoot great scores, it is presumed the course must have been playing a bit easier. The CSS is set at 69 or 68 "on the day".
Let's say an 18 h'cap comes in 3 shots better (i.e. 15 shots over par) he would normally get cut for being 3 shots under, but if the CSS comes out at 68, he'd only get cut for one shot. 3 shots would normal mean a cut of 0.9, but one shot would be only 0.3.

How is the CSS calculated though? Is the average of the best 10 scores taken or some other calculation?
I have CSS of 69 with 8 scores better, 4 at 69, 22 higher and 7 NR's

You'd need to ask someone else.....I always thought the computer did it :)

Guessing, I'd say there was a "trigger" figure. If 8 were better, 4 bang on and 22 above, then that seems correct to me.....

It's based on the percentage of the field that make their buffer zone for their handicap category but the percentage moves based on the make up of the field (ie % of cat 1, cat 2 and cat 3+4 together).
