On Saturday, we played the 2nd qualifier for our CC. Due to inclement weather, the course was closed and competition cancelled. I got an email from HDID saying medal abandoned, reductions only. So, having scored 75, I thought if it's an RO, I'll be in for a wee cut, but no, a CSS was calculated!! How can it be that someone who scored millions in the morning when the weather gets a hold because of inclement weather later, yet the people who managed to put a decent score in during the decent/inclement weather gets nothing!!?

Confused.com ..... If it went R/O then that means CSS is +3 and would be more if CSS was worked out fully?

That's what I was struggling to understand, how can they decide it's reductions only, without adjusting the CSS accordingly!?

If it's RO then CSS should be plus 3 therefore a nice cut, I don't think the club can decide themselves if it's RO and adjust a CSS due to the comp conditions if that makes sense, eg CSS = SSS but RO where the club decide it was RO and not the CSS deciding it.

Seems a snap commitee decision due the the poor weather, we had a similar comp ruling last year.

If it's on HDIDO the surely it's automatically set with a CSS of +3 with RO ? Can't see how the club can change it ?

Yep and its really not that hard to not put the comp through the software and then apply general play style cuts to the top few in the comp. Not saying it happens at my current club (anymore) but that it certainly happens in some clubs, despite what many on here may think. Not all clubs are run the same, that is for sure, and I bet if you asked plenty on here will admit to playing comps that have been declared RO either before or during, not after when CSS is calculated

That's a shame but as I said before, members should be reporting clubs that run these comps to the relevant authority instead of just going along with it.

maybe, but as a hobby some just want the easy life and dont really want to upset the club and its committee they are a member of by reporting them to their union, not saying its right, just thats often how it is in some clubs

Q. Are there any circumstances under which a club can run Stroke Play, Par/Bogey or Stableford
competitions where handicaps can be reduced but not increased?
A. A club does not have the authority to run competitions in which handicaps can be reduced but
not increased. When a competition is declared Non Qualifying handicaps can neither be reduced
nor increased. There are only two situations within the UHS when handicaps can be reduced
but not increased.These are:
• A competition where application of the CSS calculation determines that the competition is
Reduction Only (R/O). See Clause 8.4.
• When a competition has been abandoned for a valid reason, reductions of handicap are
made on the basis that the CSS is equal to the SSS. See Clause 8.6.
