Played our Men's Open today at Brandhall Golf Club. I had a knock midweek and the pins were different, and yet again they have been changed without the use of a wooden board.

Every Hole had a crown to them. The greens are quick with the flags cut on and around slopes , it makes putting far more difficult than it needs to be. You can't go dead weight, as the crown takes it. i had 6-7 putts from around 6ft that went against the natural grain of the green because of it (3 of these moved the wrong way up the slope). you can't charge it at the hole as there quick (well you could charge, if your line up is tip top!).

this type of Lazy Greenkeeping just winds me up :temper:. it's a basic element that has been ignored. Sure, it is the same for everyone and there were a couple of low nett scores in, so fair play to them, but when the crown is visible when you are lining one up.

something every club should never have a problem with when hole cutting , a square bit of wood , which costs pennies.

Rant over!

Our place always cuts the holes a day early to allow the ground time to settle, only place I have seen do this makes the holes really good though with nice crisp edges.

Does mean a metal cap over the spare hole but these are very rarely in play.

I know other members already have. i can take flags being cut on slopes, you need to judge the breaks, but Crowns are a lottery and it makes a mockery of your putting.

What did the club say? I know what you're saying about slopes and judging break but if a well struck putt won't fall on a good line and speed then it does seem to be a lottery

Crowning of holes from what I have been told is also caused by players standing too close to the edges of the holes, as the pressure makes the ground spread out, but the hole liner forces the soil up as it restricts it's movement. That was what I was told by a green keeper anyway and it makes perfect sense.

but still not using boards is just plain lazy.
