Crown Golf Selling off 8 Courses

So my local 3 including the one I'm a member at are up for sale, this doesn't surprise me as one listed has struggled with memberships and conditions for 2 years atleast

Think HTL may be pleased to see the back of Pyrford. Not one on his all time list. Traditions isn't great so not overly surprised. I knew my local one (5 minutes away) Blue Mountain would be safe as Crown Golf's HQ is there.

It'll be interesting to see what happens and I dearly hope they are bought as going concerns and not sold off for housing or something else. I guess with the right investment, they could all have the potential (even if I don't like some of them) to be nice tracks

I think tracks like Orpington with two 18s and two 9s are safe under the right management idea's ditto with addington court having two 18s

I'd like to see them both have a pay and play 18 and a members only 18

Having played both Chelsfield Lakes (the North Kent course... in Orpington) AND the Orpington Golf Centre, I can suggest they may have wanted to make all 56 holes of Orpington Golf Centre the public one... really don't like Ruxley and Cray Valley as courses.

Chelsfield is easy enough, but great facilities and a much nicer clubhouse.

I'm surprised that they are selling Poultons as it's always packed so surely must be making money. It's not the longest course or best kept but it's got some nice holes.
My worry is the theme park nearby could see this as a chance to expand and buy the course to build on.

I'm a member at Merrist Wood, happily not one on the list. A few of the ones for sale are local, although I haven't got around to playing any of them as yet.

Hopefully the sale of these clubs will mean some investment in their other clubs.

I'm sure it read that planning permission is there for new club houses at both Orpington tracks.

I dont know if all the Crown golf course are the same, but i have a few mates that are members down at Tradition's and as members they can not get on until after 1.00pm at the weekends. The tee times are sold to the public first. Strange but true.

Agreed. I've played both Chelsfield Lakes and as I used to live around the corner in Bexley from Orpington played there quite a lot, and Chelsfield is the better facility. Not very fond of either of Ruxley or Cray Valley at Orpington.

what i find strange is how certain crown golfs struggle and some dont.

Im on the mailing list for 3 of the 8 mentioned.

Orpington, you can always get a tea time for saturday morning even friday late afternoon. i constantly get emails & phone text messages with silly offers just trying to get people on the course. Ruxley tends to be in slightly worse condition compared with the cray valley course, but the cray valley course is let down by a poor club house, which is a shame as the cray course is quiet a nice track.

Chelsfield lakes, i never hear from them and they always seem to have a busy course. the only downside to the course is the buzzing of the overhead lines in certain area's of the course. but no emails, texts or anything and if you havent book by thursday at the latest you cant get a decent time.

Addington court. im a member here as its local, but you can see the course is getting less packed, and i hate to say it the summer this year left the course in a mess which its only just recovered from. this has always been kept well, but the course this year was the worst ive seen and its rumoured to be down to falling numbers. the is also strong rumours that the falcon wood side of addington court is going to be re developed into a new housing estate although we know what rumours are like.

it just aamazes me that as a group some really struggle (ruxley) for both conditions and numbers, yet some (chelsfield)always seem to be busy, surely as a group you would invest back in to keep the courses.

I always forget, which is the top one and which is the bottom one? Is Ruxley the one at the top?

It may just be that golf in general is getting a slighty later hit from the recession. I was on a training course today and drove past over half a dozen clubs on the way there. Every single one had a 'membership available' sign out the front. Even the club I am at which usually has a small waiting list has a big sign out the front advertising membership.

I get this horrible feeling that 2011 is going to be an even worse year for golf clubs. After all, at the end of 2008/2009 when the recession really hit many people had paid their membership for the year and it ma only be now that they are looking to cancel.
