am thinking of joining a club and a local course is a part of the Crown Golf group. Been looking at the website and i see a lot of clubs listed which fall into different categories - anyone here a member? can you recommend (or not!) and answer the following:

Pay for Play Clubs - I assume you get a reduced green fee on these?
Lifestyle Clubs - no idea.
Golf Clubs - can use any of these for free?

i have just found out you can only play the affiliated clubs for free on weekdays which is a dissapointment.

why don't any clubs offer a reduced rate for 'weekend golfers'. i never get to play during the week

Crown - Stapleford Abbotts is the closest.
i play the Abbotts course there quite a lot and the Priors on occaison.

my other options are Woolston Manor and Chigwell. but £1400 is a lot - would have been £800 if i'd joined last month before my b'day!!

Yea - am a member of St Mellion in Cornwall.

You get a reduced rate on weekends on the other courses I am sure. We played the Bristol Club for free during the week. One of my playing partners got a reduced green rate when he went up to Portsmouth to play for his stag do, that was a saturday. I think it was 20% off.

Ours was a private course before being taken over by Crown so some of the values remain. Fairly friendly and helpful, never really hgad any complaints. Although very pricey for this area at £1150 a year.

I must admit I had thought that all the Crown Golf courses were the same rate, we live and learn.

There is one near to me that I had thought of switching to, it stays drier. When I looked into it (never got a response from Crown Golf) I thought that most of the options to play other courses were mid-week and some of them at restricted days and times. tbh, it didn't seem much better than using GreenFree or 2-for 1 vouchers.

Hi,

I am a member of a crown club , each club charges you diffrent monthly fees for membership. I have found it great value and the chance to play the other clubs at a reduced rate is great. Any other crown course I have phoned up to book a tee time , I have never had a problem.

I think it is a good deal but it depends which one you join , I joined Wickham in Hampshire and it is one of the cheapest but I still get to play the other good courses.

At the end of the day it is each to there own , but I am happy with what I get out of there deals.

Cheers

Midnight...

cheers Midnight. i'm going to have a chat with them and try out a few other courses first, not really looking to commit until after the summer now - i currently play regularly with friends but looks like they won't be able to play much past July so will be on the lookout for something then to meet a few new people etc.

I was thinking of joining a crown golf club last year and did some research. If you are a member of the HM Forces or the emergency services then you will get a really good rate i was looking at around £450- £500 a year which is good in anyones book. Reason i did not go for it was because my mates play at a different course so i joined there.

Hi,

The main thing with Crown is the 8 free goes at all other Crown courses per year, they also give you discounted rates at courses in France if you ever go of there.

I'm a member at a crown golf course (abbotsley). The club took a lot of stick on here last year, unfair i thought but everyones allowed an oppinion.

Anyhow, i've only played 4 crown golf courses. Abbotsley, Cromwell, Trent Park and The Hertfordshire. All i would consider to be nice courses. Sometimes it can be difficult to get a tee time but if you book in advance thats not a problem, also doesn't this show how popular the courses are?

I actually think that the clubs have a more laid back feel and are less traditional because its a national organisation. Aslong as they are not letting people on the course in jeans and a footy shirt i quiet like the 21st century approach to golf.

Each to there own though mate so check out the club you are thinking of, if you sign up let me know and i'll come and play for free on a weekday.
