Croquet.. what is it all about?

After dropping nipper off to his tennis, walked past the croquet lawns. Stayed and watched few people trying to hit a round ball thru straight pegs. (with all due respect) For the life of me, could not figure out what the game was all about. Apparently there is also Golf Croquet.

Any croquet players around here?

Had a go at a posh hotel many years ago. Very tricky and completely forgotten the rules. Not as easy as it looks either

Assuming you can (nearly)hit a ball along a straight path, what is the challenge in croquet. Agreed Poor lawns can mess things up, but that is the same as putting - however unlike putting greens the croquet lawns aim to be flat with no breaks ..

Are golfers in a position to criticise croquet? I started thinking how dull it was and realised it has many similarities to golf. I still don't get it but each to their own.

Sorry, I didn't mean for it to sound like a criticism. I did understand the question, my first sentence was just a little clumsy. I agree though, I don't get it. Fine for the gentry 200 years ago, not so sure now.
