Croatia

Been the last 2 years
First near Dubrovnik, gorgeous place
Second place called Bol on an island near Split.

Good value, good food, it's safe and feels safe

Fab scenery,fab beaches
Just go there :)

Cheers guys,any recommendations for accommodation?
I prefer self catering as we'd rather eat out than be stuck in a hotel.
Will be me,the Mrs & 10yr old so don't need it too lively at night, but like to watch live music in bars etc.

Went to Cavtat, nr Dubrovnik, last year. Lovely place, friendly people, decent food, Italian ice cream, relaxed atmosphere, utterly clear water, good for swimming and water sports. Pretty scenery, costs are lower than the UK, medieval towns all over to wander around. We booked to go back within a month of returning.

I'd happily recommend it. We have two kids, 16 and 14 when we went last year.

When looking for accommodation have a look on air bnb. We found the biggest selection on there.

Great place, I've been to Split, the various islands around Split and Dubrovnik. Beautiful coastline, great people. Nothing to criticise at all. One of the best places I've been to in Europe without doubt.

If you take a boat from Cavtat to Dubrovnik you pass the "Bay of Dead Hotels"
There are several concrete edifices the remains of some pretty large hotels that were shelled by the Yugoslavian Navy in 1991 during the Croatian War of Independence.

Well within living memory .

Glad that the Yugoslav attempt to knacker Croatias tourist economy failed.

Another vote for Cavtat. We were there last year as well, cracking place. There is a little beach bar on the headland which has the most beautiful sunsets I've ever seen.

It's 10 minutes from the airport, and Dubrovnik is easy to get to (30-40 mins on a boat), and well worth a visit.

Only issue I have is that, unlike Spain, it's pretty hard to find a villa with a private pool, the norm seems to be small apartment blocks of 4-6 with a shared pool. It's a good way to meet people I suppose.

If you are feeling energetic, you can walk up the mountain at the back of Cavtat. It's a great walk, but set off early as it is hard work once the sun is belting down. We set off at 6am and were back by the pool just after 11.

I can't emphasise how much Rudebhoy is correct regarding the sunsets. Absolutely stunning and every night brought crowds out for the last 5-10 minutes. Gorgeous.

Agree about the villas. They are further back in tourist development and so that type of accommodation is simply not there. They are building lots of low level flats on individual plots rather than villas. They are however very decent, air con etc so not worries there.

If you do choose Cavtat look to get near the centre as then you will not have any hills to walk on when returning to your accommodation. Last year we were only a 10 minute walk from the centre but the last 2 minutes were up a steep hill. Hard going in hot weather. This year we are at the bottom, sea level
