Played my first game in three weeks this morning, having missed out through being away on holiday.

Walked my dog and went through my usual warm-up routine before driving to the course. Once there, I did some more stretches and hit a tube of practice balls on the range and then a few drives into the practice net. After a few putts I was ready to go...

Started ok, but driving off the 3rd tee I felt my right calf really cramp up and release almost immediately, shooting some pain up my leg. I got this a few times throughout the round, causing me to quit on impact and not fully rotate my body through. I made sure to keep hydrated throughout the round, had a good breakfast before I left and ate a banana just prior to going out.

Any thoughts as to why these cramps would occur? Does anyone experience cramping on the course?

Getting old mate :)

It's surprising what 3 weeks of not using certain muscles will do to them .

There is probably nothing wrong and over the next couple of weeks you will return to your normal cramp free self as the muscles remember what they are there for :)

Lack of exercise is often the cause so it may be just because you have been away from the course. Hydration is another but if you drank plenty of water that should be fine but remember small sips and room temperature is better than ice cold and gulping it down. If they continue you might want to take a salty snack or electrolyte heavy drink with you as these can stop cramps if they start. The best prevention is apparently drinking a glass of pickle juice which will actually stop the cramping muscles from firing immediately (before the salt even gets to the muscles) but is obviously a bit disgusting.

For most people though their regular diet will have enough of the minerals you need to prevent cramping so it is probably just the lack of golf recently.

I sometimes get the exact same thing during 36 hole comps. However, it only ever happens on the 1st or 2nd tee shots of the afternoon round. I think it must be something to do with the hour break between rounds, or because I am old. :)
