After enquiring about membership at one of my local clubs,
http://www.penworthamgc.co.uk/
i was offered a courtesy round which i played yesterday.
I arrived at the club at around 10.15 but couldn't tee off until after 12 as there was a seniors comp on (they forgot to inform me of this), so i went down onto the practice ground for an hour and had a good warm up.
Back to the club house for 11.40 and stood by the first tee for a while just to take in what was going on and got to chat with a senior member who turned out to be chair of greens. Could not have asked for a nicer chap as he told me about the club and what thing had recently been done to the cousre. He then offered me his phone number if i wanted a game sometime. He also introduced me to another chap who turned out to be club president (he also offered number).
Finally tee of time came and i went out by myself. OB first ball then put second in play. Finished first hole and following pair asked if i wanted to join them. Played a further 5 holes (not my best) then joined up with another member to make it 4 ball.
You could not have wished for a freindlier bunch of people (we had a real good laugh) and by the end of the round i had 3 people to mark my card for h/cap and one chap who wants me to join him in the pairs events next year.
As we shook hands and left the course i think i have already made up my mind to join.
The course was in great condition with all greens and tees in full use and only using mate off the fairways. The club has rebuilt all the greens in past 4/5 years and with a new greenkeeper the members say the course has never played better.
Is this experience of mine usual or do you think i have found something bit special? This club is one i had never considered before as i had heard it had a snobby reputation but now i cant wait for new year.
