And so Waltham Forest Council successfully prosecute two fellas for gobbing in the street. They failed to pay the on the spot fine of £80 and were taken to court; charges upheld and fined £300 for non-appearance. WF council charge was based upon gobbing not only being disgusting but legally equivalent to littering - hence the £80 on the spot fine for littering.

Could have interesting repercussions this on the civil liberties of some ethnic minorities. Take Rushmoor Borough Council for instance within which we find Aldershot - home of many thousands og Nepalese thanks to the efforts of Joanna Lumley (best never show your facve in Aldershot again Joanna).

And do not Nepalese men spit in public as a habit - it's a cultural thing apparently - and the locals find it disgusting and complain endlessly to the council - who have prevaricated and shrugged. Well - they don't need to now. I wonder what will happen - will we find dozens of Nepalese men (inc ex-Gurkhas) in court for gobbing in public. Assimilation of ethnic minorities into the local UK community and acceptance and forebearance of the cultural traits of the minorities is not always as easy as it might see.

Spitting in the street is unnecessary and disgusting in Britain. I don't do it, my wife doesn't do it and I don't believe anyone i know does.

The point on Nepalese portrays one of the problems we are seeing by mass immigration being forced on the country in such a short time frame. Its time we did something about antisocial behaviour where ever it manifests.

^^get's a tick in the box (a 'Like' :)) from me. Not easy to enforce given sensitivities though.

Great to see.

Though I'm not sure that an un-contested prosecution quite counts as much as to slightly propogandist message coming from Councillors.

Surely the courts have got real cases of law breaking to deal with than this.

Yes it's not very pleasant but it's hardly a crime.

Before long you will be geting dragged infront of a judge for air pollution if you break wind in public.

That's was my first thought too.

Surely we have got bigger issues to deal with??

seriously, most ridiculous use of public funds to prosecute ever. (i am sure i will be proved wrong) ok so they fined two fella's £600. how much did this cost WF council? And i am sorry, how is it legally the same as littering? you spit, it dries up or dilutes and washes away with rain. its nothing more than a bit gross, its not actually harmful though or pollutant.

I am not condoning spitting on the street, its pretty gross, however i do think there are bigger fish to fry in society today before spitting...

Good manners are one of the foundations of civilised society. Great to see.

Everyone on this thread who doesn't think this is a good thing or a valuable use of public resources is condoning spitting by default and I hope it is never my misfortune to be drawn to play golf with any of you.

As i stated, i am not condoning it at all. i am however suggesting the use of public money could be better spent elsewhere... somewhere a little bit more important..

thread reminds me of this.........anyone remember it? R.I.P Mel

Define what is important? Why is this less important than say the clearing of rubbish or graffiti? I'm fully behind the decision. Spitting is unnecessary and unhygienic. You say it get's washed away by the rain or what have you, but what if a child was to fall and put his hand in it before that happened? It can spread the H1N1 virus and other unpleasantaries.

I'm fully behind the theory that it's the small things like this that help build a better, more friendly society. If you live in a clean environment where petty small things are dealt with, it has a knock on affect to the bigger things.

In that case where do we draw the line. Urinating in the street, is that OK as well? It gets washed away by the rain and other than the stink does not really do any harm to people.

I disagree that this is a waste of public funds. I could give you a list of many things that waste massive amounts of public funds that should be addressed if we are looking to save money. Best not to go there though.

This is a great thread, taking out immigrants, Tiger and premiership footballers all in one fell swoop!

:whoo:

Nothing to do with immigrants per se - but to do with what is recognised acceptable and unacceptable behaviour in the UK. I don't know whether the lads fined were immigrants or not. But it does mean that some ethic minorities and immigrants might have to adapt their own/home ways to fit in with what we in the UK deem acceptable behaviour (see also acceptable dress, the burkha, the niqab etc).
