Was looking at an October 1992 Golf Monthly (or may have been Golf World) I came across while ferreting about in the loft earlier Every month they listed courses under construction and current status. That month there were about 220 courses built being built in England alone (didn't bother counting those in Wales and NI - Scotland not listed for some reason)

220 courses - blimey! That's an insane number. No wonder we see courses and clubs struggling and closing.

It would be interesting to see which are still around. And also a list for today - I bet there's not 220 under construction at the moment.

If you find that magazine again, it would be interesting if you could post the names of any significant or well regarded ones

There were a few that 'made it' from that era - around here the London Club was under construction then, and opened in1993, and East Sussex National was a couple of years earlier.
Some others are more significant to their current membership than the rest of the golfing world (mine included!) but we play many others built at that time in matches as well as clubs 100+ years old.
Generally the bigger projects built to bigger budgets and higher specs did best - and his seems to have proved the case subsequently as well (Remedy Oak being an example).
Those built on the basis of anything will do have faired less well - with survival being a simple function of the underlying value of the land for other development.

I joined a club that opened in 93 (Hamptworth) as it was pretty much my only option at the time. I used to drive past the Oxfordshire quite a lot around then as well when it was under construction. I think the Nicklaus course at St Mellion was around that time as well?

I think that was the previous building spree in the early 70s? Easy to confuse as it had such major redevelopments (not significantly course related).
