Off down south for a weeks holiday in late August and looking to play 2 or 3 rounds whilst down there. Staying in Exmouth. First experience of links golf hopefully, anywhere people would recommend inside an hours drive? Have had a quick look myself and so far come up with East Devon, Woodbury Park and Dawlish.
Did fancy Saunton East, and RND but not sure I can justify the hour and a half each way plus 4 and a bit hours golf when it's a family trip. Any experience of the mentioned courses/any courses I have missed would be much appreciated.

Cheers

I would say
Honiton, Woodbury, East Devon and Exeter in that order, all within about 20 minutes of Exmouth
If you are after Links, then East Devon is the way to go, Dawlish is also a local links course, but depending on the dat and traffic could take an hour from Exmouth!!

bit further afield, Okehampton is about 40 minutes down the A30

Depending on timing, I am off for the last 2 weeks in August, so would happily have a round with you at my home of Honiton. If you don't mind an average (possibly lower of the average!!) player :D

Will take a look at honiton. Cheers for the reply, could well be up for a game at honiton if things all work out timing wise

East Devon is a 5 minute drive from Exmouth. It's a cliff top heathland course, a good test of golf with some great holes and fabulous views on a clear day. I am a little biased as it's my home course. Give me a shout when you're up and if I'm around I could do a twilight with you for £15

Woodbury Park is 15 minutes from Exmouth. It's a very good Parkland course and should be in great nick in August.

Sidmouth is 20 minutes from Exmouth. Quirky course set in a valley, not my favorite, but worth playing.

Dawlish could be over an hour away in August. True links course, again not a favorite of mine but good value.

Honiton 45 minutes from Exmouth. Parkland course, ok.

Teignmouth 45 minutes from Exmouth. Similar to East Devon, up on the cliffs, heathland, some good holes and great views again.

Exeter 30 minutes from Exmouth. Nice Parkland course, worth a visit.

Hope that helps.

I would make sure you play East Devon first and foremost especially at that time of year it will be glorious up on the cliffs. Also Dawlish is a fun course and something a bit different.

East Devon isn't a links course, it is a combination of heathland, moorland and a little bit of parkland all set on top of cliffs. It is also the best course in the area by a country mile. Personally, I wouldn't pay the money to play Woodbury, I find it a bit bland.

This is only place I've played in the area but played it twice now on glorious summer evenings when on holiday, it is a really good course but the views are pretty spectacular. If you're fortunate with the weather it really is a beautiful place to wander round and whack a ball about

You are correct that its not a links course... but its not that far off being one.
I personally find the place a bit stuffy

and personally, the "true links" course in this area is Dawlish Warren which is a course I have quite a strong dislike for and not just because of the actual course.

I definitely agree with your opinion of Woodbury, but in the spring/summer it is a well maintained and beautiful place. I have my reasons for not playing there. Although my wife is there as I type this in a ladies friendly :D

Mind if I ask why? I played it a couple of years ago, I quite enjoyed it but it did beat me up a bit as I found the rough ridiculously long given how close to the edge of the fairway it was

I play golf for pleasure, MY pleasure :D

I am a high handicap player, and Dawlish definitely gives you a kicking if you are not quite accurate. I also find a lot of the "fairways" to be riddled with rabbit holes, and as its effectively part of the wildlife trust land there are a lot of things the club can't really do to the course.

I don't see (personally) going to a club knowing I will walk away with less balls, less hair and more stress, as enjoyable.

Sorry, but East Devon is nothing like a links course that I have ever played.

Fair comment, now you mention it I did lose a ball in the middle of the fairway myself:angry:

Played Teign Valley (about 30 mins drive from Exmouth) a few times on golf weekends. Really enjoyed the course, particularly the front 10 holes and the last 3.
