I was just wondering whether any forummers have ever been a course starter or marshall as it's something I've been thinking avbout recently.
What are the pro's and con's and what sort of rewards could one expect for what sort of hours?
I've been tentatively approached about doing this for societies to make sure dress codes and pace of play is adhered to.
Any pointers would be really appreciated,

Slime.

Not a Marshall's role to enforce dress codes - other than shirt being tucked in if that debatable rule exists. Pro shop/Greeter should sort that out.

Good way to learn diplomacy and realise how stupid normally reasonable people can be when they are playing golf!

I was at a course last year, not a very special course and round came the marshal to check our tickets, he was an old fellow, well into retirement age and we got chatting about what his roll was. It was about 10.30 and he has made almost £200 in green fees from people who had not paid.... Shocking, but shows for that club at least how worth it it was.

We have a couple of starters that work alt days.

Both retired, so i don't think the pay is fanstaic, bit they get free membership and uniform and sort out the caddies as well so prob geta cut on that as well.

Not a bad little number though id you are ret.

Our course marshall also hit those sort of numbers when he first started. It tailed off a wee bit as people started paying in the pro shop as opposed to trying to dodge it. The £19k he brought in more than covered his costs to the club.

I would like to see a marshall at the weekend, especially marshalling those that go out early and so set the pace for those behind. Not a job I'd do and a thankless task. Fortunately we don't really need anyone to really do this at other times. Most of the club comps tend to run on time maybe five minutes late but as we have a long par 3 starter that isn't too bad
