Course recommendations in and around Woodbridge/Ipswich

Woodbridge for a start...although squeezing on for £40 may be hard. Never know though.
Purdis Heath the other. Stunning, but may be at the top end of your pricing.

They're the only 2 I would fully recommend, although Hintlesham Hall isn't too bad. I have only played it once, and it was enjoyable. Good layout.

Never played there but I follow Ufford Park on Twitter and the course is fully open - no temp greens. Someone else on here might be able to tell you whether it's worth playing or not but would definitely be within your budget.

The trouble is with the rain we've had I'm not sure how boggy Brett Vale is. It's the one I'd describe as the hidden gem though in places the layout us a little confusing. I'd avoid Hintlesham personally just too wide and open and damp for my liking. Purdis would be the number one followed by Woodbridge. If you fancy links you could try Felixstowe Ferry though I must say the tight coastline holes are the best but a large part of the course is inland.

Have fun

Thanks peeps!

Would love to play Purdis (Ipswich) but looks like £70 a round on Sunday! Have heard it's great.
Aldeburgh is right next to where I'm staying and looks a good choice. Ken Brown redesigned recently I think.

Aldeburgh is a cracking course and it will be dry and in good shape, but not cheap at £65 weekend winter rate.
Thorpeness is also really nice and a very enjoyable course will be looking good and dry. £40 on a Sunday.

I would recommend Woodbridge - played their second course for buttons last spring and was very impressed,

One of my good friends is a member at Purdis and I'm playing it in a couple weeks - heard nothing but good things about it

You're coming to my.home town and playing golf round the corner (literally) and you never told me. Hang your head in shame my old bean ;)
Oh sorry mate - didn't realise you were over that part of the world :o

Ipswich (Purdis Heath) are doing a winter deal for £40....its a total and utter bargain at that price... the best course in the area in my opinion. You will be asked for a h'cap certificate.... and I would advise ringing up to check its OK to visit at your planned time. Hosted the EGU's Logan Trophy (Mid Amateur Championships) about 5 years ago.

Woodbridge is also very good.... not sure what offers they've got on but you'll probably pay around £40....its a good course but I feel some of the par 3's are at bit "similar" in that three of them are of a similar length around 180yds.

Further afield up the coast Aldeburgh and Thorpeness are also worth playing... though be aware that Aldeburgh is a two-balls only course..... but you could then head into Aldeburgh itself and join the queue at one of its renowned chip shops.

Hintlesham is bland.... has one half decent hole... the par 3 4th. Finn Valley is crisscrossed by electricity pylons. Waldringfield I haven't played in ages but its not much to write about. Avoid these three.

Ufford Park is a decent winter course... drains very well and is usually quite dry.... has some interesting holes including a 600yd par 5 where your third shot will often be from 180yds with a bloody great tree blocking your route to the green.... though they do seem to have cut back the tree a bit recently. Think Ufford will cost you around £34 on their winter deal which will include bacon roll and coffee and a post round meal of their specials board. Europro Tour events are sometimes held here.

Also there is Felixstowe Ferry... despite being right by the sea its not really a traditional links course....I enjoy it but there are a couple of holes that have a slight parkland feel to them. It is famed for its Fish and Chips but personally I'm not overly impressed.

Someone earlier in the thread mentioned Brett Vale in positive terms. I'm a member there (ex Captain, Handicap Sec, current Treasurer) and its is a delightful golf course, thanks for your kind comments.... its not long... but its is narrow and the wind will always keep things interesting. You won't find a friendlier club. However... currently... with all the bad weather we've been having... it is fair to say that its quite soft and muddy... usually the wind dries it out quickly but recently... just as it starts to recover, we get another deluge of rain to soften things up a bit.

Much as I'd love to say come and play here you probably would have a more enjoyable experience somewhere else.... and to be fair... if its a rare and isolated visit you need to try to play the best in the area.... so Ipswich, Woodbridge and slightly further away Aldeburgh and Thorpeness.

Hope this helps.
