course recommendation

Driving along the M4 from London to Swansea we are looking for a golf game on the way. any recommendations?

Suppose the obvious one is Celtic manor! You drive past it

Depending on what time you want to play (ie how far west!) and how much you want to play...... lost of courses to chose from! close to the M4 - google whaty suits location or ask!

- Junction 12 Calcott Park (Reading) - v nice!
- Junction 15 Ogbourne Downs - ok
- Junction 17 Chippenham or Bowood
- Junction 18 - The Players Club - (nice)
- Junction 20 The Bristol (average)
- Junction 24 Celtic Manor
- Junction 27 Newport (my home club... so recommend!)

Now I start to lose knowledge of motorway junctions..and in order of heading West Radyr (near Cardiff) , Southerndown (nr Bridgend) Pyle & Kenfig, Machynyns (nea Llanelli) , Ashburnham

The proper Welsh lads will fill in the blanks!

There are a few things in the diary tomorrow.. call Paul Thomas the Head Pro 01633 893271 and he'll let you know - the course is 5 mins from junction 27. (if using SatNav watch out for a little diversion as you turn into the road next to the Tesco Local! ) I'd sign you in, but I am on the Meet with this lot tomorrow

The Players is literally 2mins off the M4 (bath Junction) and is probably about 1/2 way between swansea and London.

It is in incredible condition at the moment.

Ian makes some good recommendations - but i wouldn't go near Ogbourne, its such a bad golf course. Bowood is brilliant, but is a good 15+ mins off the motorway.

Calcot Park was nice, but i think players is considerably better.

Neath Golf Club is very good - but by then you are virtually in Swansea anyway

Bowood House is rather good! Was a popular 'treat' while working in Swindon.

Manor House also has a good reputation - though apparently rather hilly! I haven't personally 'had the pleasure'.

Manor House is OK but not memorable (apart from the hills)

Calcot Park was nice, but i think players is considerably better.

Henbury and Filton are nice courses and not far from the M4/M5 interchange at Almondsbury Bristol.

We play our home games at Filton and it is a lovely little course, usually quiet in the early afternoon. No tee bookings, just give them a call to see if any societies etc

We played at Filton as suggested by SocketRocket. Very nice and friedly golf course. greens were excellent fairways a bit on the higher side but anyway easy accessible and very good value for money
