Hi All,

I'm looking for a decent golf course recommendation somewhere near the M6/A74 region.

Me and a group of lads or rather, golfing chaps are making our way up to St Andrews (from Gloucestershire) in August to compete in the annual Eden Tournament. We're looking to go up the day before and perhaps stop en-route for a game of golf and a hotel.

Therefore looking for a decent, testing golf course - green fee about £35 - £45 odd to have a bash around. The Eden Tournamen is links golf, so links is good - but a good parkland is not out of the question. We're all lowish handicap (3 - 8) so challenging golf is good!

Welcome any recommendations and links to websites.

Thanks in advance!

Deej

Another vote for Silloth. Super links course and very reasonable fees. Carlisle is a great parkland layout. On the other side of the border there's Southerness, another challenging links about 15 miles from Dumfries.

Another vote for Silloth although it is about 45~ 55 mins off the motorway.
Have a look at brampton, about 15 mins from the motorway, a great course with superb views, it won't disappoint.

another vote here for Silloth too.. im off to powfoot & southerness next weekend with a mate from Silloth so can update you on those two when I return..

I was a member of Silloth for 5 or 6 years. I don't recognise the comment above about the front nine being "OK" - it is a terrific traditional quirky links nine, and the back nine is excellent also. Add in friendly members and staff and it is a must visit.

Ethan I have played Silloth and would whole heartedly agree with the front 9 okay comment, nice course but far too many blind shots for my liking and a depressing outlook views wise made it a nice course for me not a terrific one.

How about the Eden at Carlisle, green fees fit your desired price range and it doesn't take you off your route by more than a mile or two. Parkland but a reasonable challenge.

I grew up in that part of the world. Powfoot is a decent enough course. I'd also recommend Lochmaben GC (about 3-4 miles from the M74 junction at Lockerbie. I'd recommend both of those before Moffat, which is a fun and relatively quirky course, but not brilliant.
