Hope everyone is well,
Hubby & I are visiting family next weekend (Easter) in Newcastle & would like to get a game in on Sat while everyone else is busy.
We would prefer to stay within a half hour drive of
Longbenton/Gosforth.
Neither of us have played any courses in the area & wondered if anyone had any recommendations or if already playing & had a spare couple of places & didn't mind the company (a pint as compensation would be provided 😉)....
Any info would be much appreciated, fingers crossed for a bit of sunshine.
Thanks in advance.

Depends on budget, but you've got Close House, Slaley Hall etc, loads of other cheaper options

You've got the Bridle Path ( Gosforth Golf Club) within 10 minutes as well as City of Newcastle, which is in Gosforth. Both are good courses. Saturday may be hard to get on, you may have better luck at Parklands, next to the driving range at the racecourse, again about 5/10 minutes from where you are. Not as good a course as the other two but probably cheaper & more of a pay & play course.

Close House, Filly course, book via tee off times. Great all round experience. Ramside Hall, nr Duham, is very nice. Burgham Park, north of Morpeth is a good course, played it last week and it was in great condition. Slaley Hall is another very good course as has been mentioned. All of these are within 20 minutes of your location.

I agree with MIB
Now that the season has just started, Saturday golf at some clubs will be difficult to book.
Slaley hall is NOT 30mins from where you will be, so you may rule that out on that basis.
But 30mins drive from Gosforth area there are plenty of courses.
Saturday afternoon may be accessible at a few too.
Gosforth GC, known locally as the bridle path, nice course.
Parklands, not the greatest layout, but normally good greens and condition, unless it's been really wet as of late.
The city of newcastle, nice course, but normally bit harder to get weekend green fee here.
Arcot hall, near cramlington, decent course, but not the best drainer.
Newcastle United golf club, good test of golf, especially if wind blows, likened to an inland links, due to its terrain, very friendly club, that I think will defenitely accommodate guests.
Newbiggin, right on the coast, great greens, always dry.
Burgham park, nice course, good greens (always)

That's just off the top of my head, those I think you may be able to book.

There are numerous others within 30mins of gosforth though......

Blyth, Wallsend, Tynemouth, Whitley bay, ponteland, westerhope, Morpeth, longhirst hall, heworth, Ravensworth, whickham, Matfen hall, ryton, tyneside..........

Even more if you add another 10-15mins to drive

Hope you enjoy, and let us know how you get on

Thanks guys,
I think Slaley hall is just a bit too far out this time but will be staying for longer later in the summer so will consider it for then.
Think we are gonna try for Gosforth GC in the 1st instance, mainly due to location as it's literally just up the road from my sisters.
Thanks again and will keep most of the other courses in mind for our longer trip in Sept when we can do midweek.

You could try... Matfen Hall, Prudhoe GC, Newcastle United GC, Westerhope GC, Close House (Expensive but well worth it) Tyneside GC and Ryton GC also.

From personal experience i would give Close House a miss. Played the Filly course last year on a freebie and I'm glad it was as it's an average course. Not worth the £50 greenfee they charge.

Can't comment on the Colt but I've heard mixed reviews.

I was going to ask about Close House. We are looking for golf breaks for next year and this along with Ramsdale Hall was put forward for the North East for a Sunday driver deal. Close House is slightly more expensive than all the other suggestions and wondered if it is worth it? Both course's look fantastic. We've done Slaley already so wouldn't want to go back there again even thought we all enjoyed it.

If you've never been to close house, then it's another box ticked I suppose.
Great facility, welcome, and the best 2 ( condition ) courses in the county.
I've played them both, only live about 1.5 miles away.
Neither would be in my local top 5 though.
IMHO the Slaley Hall courses are better.

Good call from MIB about matfen hall, a venue I do rate

We liked Slaley, preffered the Priestman to the Hunting but both in cracking condition.

Will look at Maften too.
