Do you buy them, even though you have a GPS of some kind?

Do you think their value for money?

I have rarely bought one but I wanted a memento if nothing else from playing Wallasey yesterday but, I have to say, what an excellent course guide it is and the best £5 I've ever spent.

It started with a general "How it all began" feature and then a short biography of Dr Frank Stableford and then Bobby Jones. It then has some photo's of the course, a scorecard, local rules and then a small feature about "Golfing Greats". Key to diagrams and an aerial shot of the course. 18 very detailed hole layouts which were essential for your first visit as there were quite a few blind drives and 2nd shots over mounds and spotting a target was quite tough and pot luck at times. It then rounds off with "Golfing Milestones" and a feature of their clubhouse and Club Professionals since 1891.

Not only a great course guide and shot shaver but an excellent read of what Wallasey and golf in the north west has achieved over the years.

What's the best course saver you have purchased and what's your own home courses like, from a visitors perspective?

I have a box full of course planners here somewhere, as i'd always buy one when playing a new course.
I remember buying one before playing a competition on the Arden course at the Forest of Arden, in the planner it gave yardages to front of greens from different coloured/shaped markers on the fairways. Six months later i loaned the planner to a mate who was playing the Champion of Champions Regional Final there, he ended up having to buy another, after it became apparent during the practice round that the markers had been changed, and the planner i'd loaned him was useless !

Some are obviously better than others and if I get one it will be as a momento. I hate the ones that have pro tips that say things like, "off the tee, you want to hit a straight drive to have any chance of getting on the green in 2. Aim for the green from the fairway and a birdie is a definite possibility on this hole" - No **** sherlock! :)

I always buy one, one a momento and 2 it does help despite a gps to have an overview of the hole on the tee IMO.
I have a box full and the best so far is chipping sodbury, not only a hole view with distances but also is a 3d image showing elevation changes too.

Buy one at every course I visit for 2 reasons - I use a Bushnell and hazards aren't always visible so use the planner to tell me if there's anything there & for a memento hopefully of a well played round!

I don't really know what my best one is I've a few good'uns (Wallasey included) but the worst is from Barlaston, can't remember how much it cost but it can't have taken long to produce!

nope and nope :smirk:

...and for the price some courses charge I would expect it to be included in the price

If it's a "big" course then as a memento I'll buy one and if it's a "big" competition at a course I don't know then I'll also buy one. There are a few that don't give yardages off the red tees to hazards though! Bought 2 in the past couple of weeks and one was £1 and the other £5 with no obvious reason as to the differential in price.

I used to always buy one and a ball marker as memento's when they were available. Found some badly made, most got damaged due to rain on the day and annoying to throw them in boxes and never see them again. Just get the marker now and can add them to my A3 map with a bit of blutak to keep track of where I have played.

I used to buy them before I got a DMD. I still get the odd one (or they are included) when you play some of the open rota courses.

For Carnoustie, St.Andrews, Turnberry etc I also put down my score on each hole, what clubs I hit, number of putts and little circles to show where I hit it to etc.

I may only play these courses once or twice in my lifetime, so it is a nice keepsake to see the holes in all it's glory, but also to see how I played each hole. Adds to the memory, for me.

That's actually a really nice idea. Might start buying them again. Hope they show 50 yards either side of the fairway though ;)

As others have said I usually byt them as a memento but end up tossing them into a box never to be seen again.

I always buy one whenever I go somewhere new. They are a great memento, my playing partners are always jealous wish they had bought one.

Nice idea with marking them up with the shots youv'e played, think I'll start doing this, and use different colours everytime I play to keep a record (thats if I ever plat them more than once.)
