Anybody else play today? I played a local municipal up here in MCR and after the amount of rain weve had this week it was a quagmire in places with lots of standing water on fairways, greens and in bunkers. Still better than Xmas shopping though!I still wouldnt have been anywhere else though! My missus asked me what would happen if it rained when we played and was shocked when I said we'd carry on playing!

No standing water anywhere, a couple of areas to the sides of the teeboxes were a little trodden looking but the greens here in bangor (co.down) are still spot on obviously not as fast as a few months ago but still very very playable. Fairways are soft to good and no fat shots today at all!

All of you who got to play are jammy sods and I poke my tounge out at you all. I was being trailed around shops all day witha wallet emptying faster than a can of Super-T in the hands of a vagrant.

On a serious note glad to see so many people who don't cry off the minute it gets a bit cold/wet/windy like so many do!

Royal Ascot was surprisingly good considering the downpour e had for several hours last night. No standing water in any of the bunkers, all the tees were perfectly fine and the greens were perfectly playable (damp but true).

Played the 1st round of the winter knockout (4ball better ball). We were 2 down after three but 2 up after 9 (including two birdies from me). All over by 14 and we won 6&4 so definitely no complaints about the course

The weather was ok for today but a strong wind on the closing holes caused no end of trouble.

15th, 172 yard par 3 is usually a 6 iron for me, today it was a 3 wood!

17th, 390 yard par 4, hit driver, 3 wood and still had 20 yards left!

yup the course is really playable but the wind made it very interesting!
130yd 6 irons today hitting them as low as possible too! I think one weather site mentioned 40mph winds.

course was in pretty good condition generally...

some greens weren’t the best - a bit bumpy from foot prints. I hit 34 putts instead of the 29 ive been used to. I hit 3 GIR last week and ended up 2 under on the holes. 3 GIR yesterday and ended 2 over on them.

Also its getting to the point where you need to be more weary of hitting fat shots as the fairways get a little softer

I went to the course today but it was raining, decided not to bother, seems lots of people thought likewise! At least the course isnt geting a bashing like las year when people went out regardess and it took months of good weather before it recovered.

I think at private clubs the course will be preserved thorugh higher levels of consideration for it.

Basically the subs are all paid up so whether or not the course is open the money is still in the pot.

I am nomadic at the moment and some of the courses I have used are have been hammered in years before because basically if people aren't playing people aren't paying, sometimes I'm afraid cash is king and bollocks to anything else is the ethos at these places.

I agree, What I hate seeing is societies getting sent out when the course is touch and go with regards to the playability. Don't get me wrong, as well as my main membership, im a member of a society and have been for 3 or 4 years and cn appreciate that not everyone plays of singe figures. Watching someone hacking the sh1t out of our first teebox (and the rest) but seeing that its a par 4, really hacks me off, the teebox should have relatively few marks on it yet its usually got the odd trough and divot heading 45 degrees off the direction of the fairway.

Played Friday on Anglesey - windy but quite playable - got in before the rain. Spent Saturday with family but went with them to take a look at Nefyn course - fantastic scenery and we're planning to go back - but no regrets at not having the clubs. I would have been pushed to get the ball in the air and moving forwards!

I Played Bull Bay in Anglesey recently, the course was immense, just as good as any summer course, the wind was wild as was my golf. Well worth a visit though!

Hi Greenkeeper
We played Bull Bay last summer and I found it hard enough then! Hoping to go back- good course - but will wait for the wind to relent.
We usually play Henllys Hall but very boggy this weekend so will give a miss for a while. Baron Hill is okay 9 holes (if you like gorse!)

Have you played Treaddur Bay?

I spotted this course when I was hols.....looked good but what a bleak and inhospitable part of the UK?

£30 for the day sounds good though, might go back, this time with clubs and at the height of summer.

Ali..what brings you up this way?

In-laws are from Beaumaris on Anglesey - not bleak compared to some of Wales - but then, being a Scot I am used to bleak!

You should definately stop off next season/year for a game in Shrops or Llangollen way. The vale (of Llangollen) might be just off your route. Me and the other dave are going to meet up now and again for a game.

I'd say stop off near Shrewsbury on the A5, but Llanymynech would be a better bet or Oswestry.

We usually go via Shrewsbury, Oswestry, Wrexham but can deviate!
Stopped off to look at Milend Oswestry but didn't play. Quite fancy Church Stretton after your (?) recent description.
