Hey all,

On tuesday played for my county(somerset) under 14s team against gwent under 14s. It was amazing. Bacon roll as we got there. Nine holes of foursomes in the morning followed by a light lunch. Then 18 holes of singles followed by 2 course meal. Also they give you 3 new pro V1's (with somerset logo on side), range tokens, bananas, water and they set up a tab for you in the bar.

That was great but the fact that somerset won added to the greatness of the day. I lost my foursomes on the 9th hole. After pegging back from 2down, 3 to play. A/S going down the 9th. Then after that close defeat i played my singles. I was playing an 8 handicapper from celtic manor golf course. I would have had a shot on him but it was gross. I was 1down through 9 but then i birdied 10,11 and 12 on the trott. I had gone from 1down to 2up. By the 15th tee i was 4up dormie. He pumped himself up and went birdie, par to get back me back to 2up dormie. Then i made par and all he could manage was a bogey to take the match 3&1. Very happy aswell beacuse the team won 7-5.

What a day. :)

Well you need to play your local junior opens. If you are good enough and play well in any tournaments you will get realised by the coach. Generally you need these handicaps to have a secure place-

Under 14s- 12 and below
Under 16s- 7 and below
Under 18s- 4/5 and below.

Hope that helps.

Most junior county sides start with recommendations from the junior organisers at club level. From there the nominees are usually invited to a couple of get togethers and a couple of trial rounds and then they pick the best from there. Certainly how it worked in my day.

Well played Feary, great post and thanks for sharing.
Sounds like an enjoyable day and good to hear you held your nerve when needed.
Keep that up and you will be in the scratch team soon

Thats a good point Feary. I'd forgotten about open events too. They will certainly get you noticed much quicker if you perform well, but a lot of it still comes back to getting a recommendation first from the junior organiser. It certainly gets you on the radar and therefore more attention at these events where even if you play poorly on the day, county officials can recognise any potential and make a note accordingly
