We had our county champs for Nairn-shire at the weekend. though its a small county with only two clubs in it, they have almost 2000 members with a good few cat 1 golfers.

36 holes which is a round on each off the back tee's (blue at Nain) so both courses over 6800

how many played???

45:( half the number from last year. a couple of the other county champs are having the same trouble. Ive been told 5 years ago you were balloted out if you were over 4 handicap.

What sort of numbers do other Championships have?

45 probably represents 100% of the 3 or better handicappers across the 2 clubs!

whilst other, higher, handicaps will also enter I can't see this as a poor turn out - quite the opposite.

it's hard to compare such events over the years for a number of reasons

BB&O is limited to 72 places. The lowest 48 entries are exempt, the other 24 places are decided by a 36 hole qualifying event called the Penfold Trophy. Handicap limit is 5.4. It never seems to have trouble filling the spots but then BB&O has a lot of clubs and therefore golfers.

Pretty sure it was capped, mate of mine was on a waiting list.

The reason I didn't play this year(and a few I know) is because of how pathetically slow it was last year. 4.5 hrs in the morning with nobody in front of the competition was absolute nonsense, after being 20mins slow at the 1st, left me 30 mins to get from one course to the other then get food(didn't happen because I was walking) before teeing off again. We held off as long as we could to build a gap in front then caught up at the 3rd, and were held up on every shot thereafter. Gave up at the 16th green, 4hrs to there. Yes it was windy, yes the rough was pretty savage at both courses but it's not the open championship, just get on with it. If it really means that much to the scratch guys then keep it as a scratch comp because the handicap prizes really aren't worth it for anyone who is doesn't have a realistic chance of competing in scratch.

I think if they played over two days there might be a more convincing entry, maybe even split the tee times on each day so as not to take up too many slots at either course.

when i started digging to see if there was any significance to any particular group all I found was

1. 41 this year
2. 44 last
3. 31 in 2011

none of which particularly ties in with what you have posted; so I must be looking at the wrong data...

Ours is limited to ~60 entrants, hcp 5 or less.

Can very much empathise with this point. Our lot set out first thing saturday morning and we expect a result sometime mid-september. The pace of play was glacial at best but probably more Triassic. I took a newspaper but could not eke it out to 5hrs in the afternoon.

The last group in ours were horrendously slow. I was playing in the 2nd last group and we finished 4 holes ahead of the last group in the 1st round and we were 5 holes ahead of them when we finished the 2nd round. We were only in 3's as well.
