I have been looking into taking on a country membership next season in addition to my home course. I have had a look into a few but prices have been a little higher than I was hoping. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Looking for something up to 50 miles from Edinburgh (but will let me join being an Edinburgh resident), Longer course (PAR 71,72) and preferably with some water on it. Prices up to £200ish for the year.

for what purpose?

Ah my unfortunate namesake!

I play at a Par 69 now and know it well. I am looking to take on a new club with more distance to challenge myself and try to compete in medals there. I do like my home course and club so I don't want to change memberships over but the option to play 10-15 times somewhere further afield would be good.

Id be surprised if you get anything of quality and distance within your price range. As an example, Glenbervie at Larbert is £500 to join, £350 a year and the stipulation is a minimum of 100 miles away. Leven Links is £405 but you would fall into their distance catagory. East Lothian is likely to be a non-starter as I know Craigielaw are looking for 100 miles or more distance wise.

You should fit the criteria for Falkirk Tryst, £250 and a decent course too but not a lot of water on it, joining fee is £125

i have a county membership for Moray which is just over 50 miles from my doorstep. I would be surprised if there were may clubs so close to Edinburgh than would offer a really cheap deal for 50 miles.

Ours has will change from 50 to 30 miles next season according to the AGM notice i got today and will be £295 which is good value considering the course condition in the winter

Have just joined moraygolfclub on the winter ticket, do you know the minimum distance and price for the country membership?

its 50 miles + and mine was £220 for this year, but i got a deal last year as i got 6 months for £170 which included a joining fee, i think you would have to play a joining fee still. usually starts in Jan for full membership.

I get ten 4 balls for guests and can play in 6 medals, but not got round to playing any so far, though i have played some opens.

where do you stay?

It's an option I've been considering. Lots of great course in a 50+ mile radius and the temptation to join a really nice one and use it during my work holidays and weekends (depending on restrictions) is a strong one. Not sure it'll come to owt but for the moment its a big lure

Member at Elgin but equal distance to Lossiemouth. Joined on winter ticket which would come off full membership if I joined.

Elgins a nice track, but if i lived that close it would be Moray no question, two courses and its pretty dry on the old, so winter golf pretty much guaranteed .

Felt my golf had to improve before going to a links, played it for the 1st time in August and didn't do to bad, but it was a calm warm day. Played nairn Dunbar for the 1st time this summer as well and found it really hard.

Looking further a field but somewhere that has reciprocals nearer to you could be an option?

Scotscraig is great value for money, I had country membership at Leven Golfing society 2 years ago, love the course but found I didn't play it enough to justify continuing, perhaps another local course that has good reciprocal deals might be the answer (as Robin says), we have Scotcraig, Lanark & East Renfrewshire and have played around 10 rounds in total between them, all between 30/50 miles away so it feels like a wee away.

i would say it will help your game some what. It may be a while to get used to how to score. But well worth the change.

Dunbar can be difficult, its just getting though the first 6 holes with out mucking your card up.

Have to arrange a game some time, though Im not sure i will keep it on next year, only played half a dozen times. Playing the Texas Scramble on Sunday with some mates

Think the Scotscraig one finishes this year Kenny, we have Lundin Links,Crail and Ladybank on reciprocal which we get for £15 so no need for a country membership for me
