Countback

At our level of golf we have no idea what the winning score is going to be so just go out and shoot the lowest score you possibly can.

To play like that you need to be a good golfer who goes out expecting to win, expecting to be in the mix. If I had a good front nine it would a/ be a shock, b/ I would go into protection mode as per FD. The nearer the end the more defensive I get. Putter off the 18th tee :D

The psychology of golf.........

Agree with this, but, like FD, I also probably get a bit negative towadrs the end when o a good score.

All the latest individual comps at at Leighton Buzzard have been won with silly high scores, so for single figure handicappers hoping to win there's no option to preserve a card, you've just got to keep attacking all the way down the stretch.

The last 2 competitions in the last 2 weeks (with fields of around 100+) were won by the same player shooting 44 points one week and then scoring +9 in a bogey competition just 6 days later.

not really, Ive lost out on count back more times than i care to remember as i never play 16,17 and 18 well if ive a good score going

Other peoples scores are out of my control so are not factored into my game plan.

How someone might score in an hours time has no bearing on the shot in front of me. Considering it is only filling my mind with useless distractions that can at best encourage additional risk taking.

Nope. And it doesn't really come into things.

We have multiple start points, so as often as not, if I'm having a good round, I've already done the back nine - or most of it. But if I'm on a good score, I may be more cautious over the closing holes so as not to throw away the round. (But I usually still manage to do so...)

Not because of countback! But most of the courses I've either belonged to or play often have 'challenging' finishes!

Last week was all too typical! 17points front; 32 points after 15 (where 'match' was won) 2 points for last 3 holes! :o

We have a two tee start so my first 9 could easily be the back 9. I usually find the back 9 the easier 9 but I'm probably not alone in thinking that and certainly I've gross par'd that 9 much more often

The mention of that word has started my nervous twitch again. Hate it (bar the two rare occurences where I beat dear old RickG on c/b) but the short answer is no. You've no idea what scores are in, or going to come in so you can only make the best score you can on each hole and hope it's good enough

I play to the best of my abilities to take the least amount of shots on each hole. Not good enough to try to protect a score. One of our regular group has won at least four best front nine prizes in the club this year but seems to go the bits on the back nine. We have even asked for crumble to be added to the food menu and named after him.

Also, does every club now go on the best back nine? I was a member at a club a few years ago where countback was on the best front nine as it was the harder of the two nines.
