Not sure the Rules forum is the place for this but it might be.

Can someone explain to me how a countback works? I know what it is, I just don't know how it's worked out i.e. do they go back one hole at a time until someone has a better score, or is it a set number of holes, or is it back 9 then front 9?

Was involved in a comp at the weekend in which a few scores were split on a countback, which I'd never experienced before, so just wondered how it was decided.

Thanks

whilst I agree with Brendy on what's usual....the important point is that the way ties are to be decided must be set out by the committee in the Conditions of Competition; the rules require the committee to do this!

so the real answer is 'however it's set out in the COC' :)

for stableford it's normally back 9, 6, 3, 1 on points scored.
for medal it's normally the same but net on handicap, with playing handicap directly proportioned over the relevant number of holes (and not rounded)
it can involve a play off ....

What happens on a 2 tee start? Is it the course back 9 still even though that's the front 9 for half the field?
