As I was writing in the "Rory Proofing" thread, I started to wonder whether Rory would/ could pose a challenge for the long drive boys? I believe that they use different equipment in the long drive comps? Given what he can do distance wise with tour approved kit, I was wondering whether he could top 400 yards with the kit used by the long drive boys?

No.

One of Joe Millers best is around the 470 yard mark.

It's also quite specialised.

Rory's clubhead speed tops out at 123, Joe Miller gets it up at 150+. That is a massive difference, and I'm sure Rory can crank it up higher than 123, but he isn't getting anywhere near Joe Miller and the Long Drive boys. He's long for the tour, but he's not Long Drive long.

Rory versus big Joe Miller might be a good "one off spectacle" but would hate to see him lose focus on what he is the world's best at - an enviable all round game.

stay focused Rory!

Your all forgetting one big thing……money!
Long drive is not a money game, why would any of Rorys sponsors allow him to fail at something knowing full well he wouldn't be up there with the best.

....

Absolutely the #1 reason!

LDA's Annual World Championship is a $250K Winner takes all event.

There's 4-5 times that much for the winner on the PGA every week!!

And he's indeed waaay too short for Long Driving anyway!

nope- nowhere near, there are bigger hitters on tour who dont even qualify

I think Dustin Johnson played against Jamie Sadlowski (sp?) a few years back. Jamie's drives were still going up when Dustin's landed.

But these long hitters can't score. I saw a Golf Channel programme where Jason Zuback and a few of his mates went to a massively long (nearly 8000 yard) course in Texas and they would hit 400 yard drives and have 175 yard wedges to par 5s and walk off with par or bogey. Rory could give Joe Miller 10 shots round Quail Hollow.

Rory would definitely beat them on the course, but they're not all bad golfers. Jamie Sadlowski has played in numerous Canadian Tour events, and featured on the Nationwide Tour. He's no world-beater, but he's an excellent golfer that can score low.

Sadlowski's career earnings from the Nationwide/Web.com Tour and PGA Canada Tour combined is a shade over $6500. He may have scored low, but not on those Tours.

Just goes to show that it isn't all about distance.

Not to mention risk injury for a poxy $250k
