Cough and cold remedies

This works for me.....

Boil up, 3/4 of a pint of a decent lemonade. Add to a VERY large whiskey. Drink whilst hot / warm. Repeat until you go to bed. Sweat like hell all night. Fine next day.

How avoid is a better way. Eat loads of onions and tinned tomatoes. Most recipies I do have these ingredients in. No cold so far. Wife and I have not had one for two years now. Despite 3 year old grandson catching everything and coming round trying to spread his bugs on to us.

Not sure if a lot of it is psychosomatic, but I use those First Defense sprays as soon as I think I may be getting a cold, and on the whole they seem to work. Vics do them but Boots do a version with exactly the same stuff in it for half the price. It may well just contain 99.99% water and 0.01% salt for all I know, but they do the trick for me.

Echenasia at the first sign can help lessen the impact.

I've had about 8 absolutely stonking colds in the last 12 months so I wish someone would find a cure!

Cheers all. Just back from playing in a 4BBB competition and feel rough now as it was cold and windy out there. Think I'm going to try a hot toddy and we're going to have a chicken madras for tea which will hopefully sweat it out.

It's the first time I've had a cold for ages:( Have been on the echinacea (sp?), soluble vitamin C, paracetamol and cough medicine all day.

Not heard of First Defence before so will remember that one.

Plenty of oranges in your diet helps prevent you catching cold.

A good cure that works for me is the following;

Plenty of hot tea.
Hot lemonade with a large measure of whisky at night.
Tomato soup.
Whimper and whine like a girl.
Get my other half to run after me day and night with hankies, paracetamol and all remedies mentioned above.

Repeat for 4 days.

Hey presto, the cold is gone. :D

Get the hot tub piping hot, and then grab a good book and a bottle of whisky. Sweat it out with heat inside and out... rarely works but by the time I sober up its usually gone.

Had it for about 6 weeks from just before new year which was spent in Berlin, put a right downer on the five days we were there. Got rid of it for about five days then got it again with a real vengeance. I was a right mess, saw the doctor who said there is more flu viruses about than ever and after just getting over one my immune system was low. Which is why the second bug put me on my backside.

Dr recommended just ibuprofen and paracetamol.

I take vitamin C tablets when I feel a cold coming on. Just gives the system a boost and seems to help and I never seem to have a bad cold for more than a few days anymore. Nothing really cures it once you have it and you just need to treat the symptoms

3 Days!

Otherwise it's purely treatment of symptoms!

Prevention, by wearing the correct amount and type of clothing for ambient temperature and eating well.

Totally agree on the 3 days part!

But how on earth does wearing correct clothing prevent a viral infection that's transmitted by either droplets in the air or by contact with infected surfaces?

It doesn't prevent the acquisition of the virus. But it can prevent the symptoms - which is what everyone is trying to avoid - developing!

Here's a rather extreme example!....

Does getting cold or wet cause colds?
The only thing that can cause a cold or flu is a cold or flu virus. Getting cold or wet won’t give you a cold. However, if you are already carrying the virus in your nose, it might allow symptoms to develop.
A study at the Common Cold Centre in Cardiff found that people who chilled their feet in cold water for 20 minutes were twice as likely to develop a cold as those who didn't chill their feet.
The authors suggest that this is because some people carry cold viruses without having symptoms. Getting chilled causes blood vessels in the nose to constrict, affecting the defences in the nose and making it easier for the virus to replicate.

Here's a subsequent statement though...

"Getting a cold from going out in the cold or after washing your hair is a myth," says Dr Joshi. "Colds are common. If the virus is already there and then you go out with wet hair and develop symptoms, it's common to think that is what caused it."

Apparently I spent all night coughing over HID. I mostly slept through it but felt much worse this morning. Decided to go the GP's and glad I went as I've a chest and throat infection:( Great timing with Formby on Sunday!

Plenty of oranges in your diet will not prevent you from catching a cold. Recent studies suggest daily intake of vitamin C may reduce the duration of a cold, but even that is inconclusive and hasn't been replicated in most studies. There is a paper explaining it here - http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/14651858.CD000980.pub4/abstract
