We are in the process of planning a revamp of the house. The internal stairs is the first thing you see when you come thru the door. It has a 70s 'ranch' style stairs and is plain ugly. So had my builder come around for some ideas. In his opinion we could get a white handrail and wooden spindles. The Mrs is keen to have oak/warm brown handrail. The builders view was that the cost of just the oak handrail would be the same as white handrail + spindles!! Recently a friend got walnut handrail + glass balustrades for one flight of stairs and it cost them about 5K of silly money.

I like the walnut/oak feel, but dont have that kind of money. Anyone knows why handrails are so expensive for effectively a piece of timber. Any ideas of reducing the cost

I did a gallery landing as a DIY project a few years ago, wood sourced from B&q from a specialist company called Burbridge who do all the bits,
It needs some planning and prep, but anyone with reasonable DIY skills can do this

I did :)

Edit it cost about £2000 but you get to choose the finish so add a bit on for varnish etc
But painting those spindles is a pain in the doo dah

I am sure it is the same company as Lord Fragger has mentioned but check out the Richard Burbidge website.

That's them , they do everything you need :)

Perlease it's Darth Fragger or my light sabre might find its way in your direction :)

Without Vaseline :)

looks good... you might have missed your calling :)

Did you get everything from Burbridge? my fellow said the white thing would be about 1200 for us, but if went oak/walnut we are looking at 1200 just for handrails. Question: cant you just get white handrails and then sand and colour them differently?

As Darth Fragger has said, the oak spindles will look excellent, do your homework on whether you stain or paint them.. Bought oak skirting off the tinternet and it looks the mutts. Ended up cutting a few pieces off and staining a few samples to get the right colour.
i think on the buridge site there is a stairs planner. It may well give you an idea of what's required, type in postcode on site and it will give you nearest stockists.
if your not confident of doin it yourself, get a joiner in. If you do paint/ gloss the stairway look at buying pine or summat similar as it will be cheaper and you won't know the difference.

We got this fella in, and he did a fantastic job, at a great price.

Ours was like this design, but as I can't be bothered to polish it, and not show the recent puppy chewings on a golf forum, here is the picture from his website:-

His first price was a little beyond our means, so he brought his price down, and instead of staying in a hotel for 3-4 nights, we put him up and fed him as well. Lovely bloke, and delivers a quality product and all hand made.

Don't know, it's not my house - this was taken from his website.:)

My one, which is similar to the one shown cost me around 2-2.5k from memory, although as mentioned, I put him up and fed him for 3-4 days, which kept the cost down, with him not having to stay in a hotel. he is from Nuneaton, in case that helps.

you got any decent reclamation yards nearby, you might be able to find all the bits you need to be able to do the project?

unless your handy with tools, then you will have to seek a decent chippy, but it also depends on how you knewl posts/strings are at the moment?

Randomly a contact on another forum has just posted that if you spend £100 on stair parts at Wickes you get £20 off. Worth knowing I guess :)
