Corners !!!

It's been said a few times and has been the topic of endless debates between me and my mates. Every time there is a corner you could easily give a penalty or a free kick to the defending team.
In my opinion it's getting ridiculous and something needs to be done. Video technology maybe? I think if one ref gave 4 penalties in a row from 4 corners, it will soon stop....
Anybody else got any ideas?
 
Didnt Shawcross get punished last week for it

Only for it then to be ignored again
 
They are all at it and shawcross and skirtel are the worse by far , should be a pen everytime with these 2 , oh send them off as well
 
Why send them off ?

It's a foul and a penalty and every CB does it
 
The refs have to simply enforce the laws that are there and give a penalty. If enough of them did it then within 2-3 weeks defenders would stop doing it. They only do it now because they can get away with it. Annoys me hugely this one. I normally defend referees but on this one they are letting themselves down.

Agreed. It's getting silly now. It's the pushing and shirt grabbing that gets on my nerves....
 
Of course in can be dealt with. What do you think would happen in a Rugby match if someone held on to another shirt in the line out.

I assume that you are referring to all the shirt pulling, holding and pushing that goes on every time a corner kick or free kick is taken. I don't like watching it, but it is often 6 of one and half-a-dozen of the other, so who should the ref penalize? :mmm:

I dont get it?

Player takes shot- hits off defender and crosses line= corner. Where does a penalty or free kick come into it?

There is plenty rule breaking going on in rugby unpunished, like taking the scrum down whilst making it look like the opposition doing it. Plenty examples of that in the Glasgow v Montpellier game at the weekend. Get the loose head playing games and the tighthead will always drop.

And whilst i'm talking Rugby, your boys took a bit of a thumping from that wee Scottish pub team last weekend ;)

Did you manage to see any of it?
 
A premiership referee told a referee mate of mine that they were told, from on high, only to give a penalty when it's blatent and they are dead certain and really have no choice.

Apparently they did a bit of a crackdown a few years ago when this all started but the fans feedback was that they didn't want to see loads of penalties deciding games, so they appear to reap what they've sown!

Holding an opponent includes the act of preventing him from moving past or
around using the hands, the arms or the body.
Referees are reminded to make an early intervention and to deal firmly with
holding offences especially inside the penalty area at corner kicks and free
kicks.
To deal with these situations:
• the referee must warn any player holding an opponent before the ball is in
play
• caution the player if the holding continues before the ball is in play
• award a direct free kick or penalty kick and caution the player if it happens
once the ball is in play

The rules are there , just need applying. I think the problem is that the attacking team are usually just as bad as the defending team in a six of one...... scenario. I think that booking both players is the answer with a clear "do that again and you are off" and I think we'd soon see an end to it.
 
Interesting topic this one, given the united Chelsea game yesterday and the subsequent tweet John Terry put on twitter.

Its nothing new, it's been happening for years. We just see more of it now due to technology. What really bugs me, is when the likes of Terry and Ivanovic stand pleading and screaming blue murder, when they have been at it at the other end.

The higher the standard of football, the more you get away with. I recently stopped playing competitive football after 22 very enjoyable seasons (started aged 8). Having played in the West Cheshire League (locally, top level amateur league) I couldn't believe how much more physical it was compared to typical Sunday football when I first started.

Personally, I feel its a much better game when the ref's let the game flow. That doesn't happen on a Sunday. The ref's really like to earn their £15 and give everything and every player gets frustrated by it. The Saturday ref's seem to give the impression they don't have a point to prove and don't react to comments made by players when a decision goes against them. The game flows and everyone enjoys it more.

Unless its a completely blatant off the ball obstruction which gives an unfair advantage, i'm happy for things to remain as they are. Football is a contact sport and is more enjoyable when it's none stop. The thought of video replays and what not make me cringe.

If you watch most modern corner set pieces, they usually involve one or two players making a run that blocks a defender, to allow their team mate to run free for an unchallenged header. Can you imagine how long it would take to review just the corners?

Applying the first 2 bullet points to both players involved would normally work

Quite happy to see Penalty given if its blatant like Shawcross last week

Time some cards were given for surrounding the ref and appealing for cards too
 
If the refs don't deal with it then the fouled player should pick himself up and promptly rap the nut into the bampot that fouled him, that'll make him think twice about doing it again! :D

Yes, that was a bit of a drubbing from the Warriors, especially as our Scrum Half was robbed from them... Didnt see it as I dont get the opportunity since moving away from the area. I have to make do with the Warriors myself these days (Worcester Warriors that is ;))
 
Until the referees take a firmer stance and impose the laws in a stricter manner and start giving penalties (or defensive free kicks) and yellow cards it won't change. UEFA won't do anything. They never do
