Played our comp today and for the first time I kept a 7 off the card - 2 3's (inc a chip in for an eagle, my first of those too), 3 4's, 5 5's and 8 6's

Gross 91, 37 pts. Used the driver only four times. Probably lost half a dozen shots through sloppy chipping and had a handful of putts that could well have dropped on another day. Something to be learned if I can take an iron off the tee all day and still shoot below handicap while playing well below average in the short game.

Dr Bob Rotella's book already helping my game

Sounds like some nice steady scoring.

I went the other way today, just put my driver back in the bag (bag was too heavy to carry in last weeks heat so ditched it) and then shot my best comp score.

Just counted back my round and boy, do I know where my next practice session is going to be.

On 13 holes I had an Up & Down opportunity - so within chipping/putt from off green distance - and managed only a solitary chip in. 8 missed up and downs and 4 fours (the Up & Down equivalent of a three-putt) to take a total of 41 shots from near the green. A 50% success rate, along with avoiding those fours, would have shaved 8 shots off and given me a massive PB.

To the chipping green...

Chipping and putting is the key to scoring. If you can keep show stopping big numbers off the card you will always score well but getting up and down will turn a mediocre score into something far more competitive

+1 from me.

I played the first round of our club champs today.

Struck the ball rubbish. Hit 3 fairways and 6 greens but somehow managed to score 79.

In a Bob Rotella book, he gives an opinion that the state of your long game on any given day determines the worst you can score but the short game determines the best you can score.
