Get an iPad to hdmi or iPad to VGA adaptor
then an hdmi cable I assume- will this work for skype?

Buy a £69 Apple TV 
They are available most places at around that price last time I checked for a mate, it's less hassle than faffing around with wires etc and you can sit in the comfort or the sofa whilst controlling etc.

it will be used once for skyping Christmas day but as there are loads of us a 50" TV is best to view rather than crowding round an iPad. £69 for something used once for 10 mins or so isn't economical

Fair enough if only for one use for Skype, I use mine to stream films and music etc too and also BT sport App onto big screen.
If it's only for Skype, I'm sure you can do that straight from the smart TV without involving an iPad, just need a plug in Camera, not sure the cost of these though?

This connector and a hdmi cable will let you do it - http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MD826ZM/A/lightning-digital-av-adapter - will work for Skype - £40 though
ta, its ipad 3 so that would be £35, still not cheap but worth it to see and speak with relatives far away on Christmas day- not often we are all together but apart if you get my drift
