Apologies if this has been asked before recently, struggling to find any info. I would like to maintain my CONGU handicap, however I can't seem to justify being a member of a club in which I hardly play (Hoebridge). It is fairly cheap being just under £300 a year with a pay as you play membership, but due to other commitments this year it is unlikely I will play much at all. Does anyone know of any clubs offering a cheaper annual fee in Surrey?

thanks
Darren

No clubs attached to a municipal course near you ? Our clubs attached to munis are usually £50-£100 subs per year'

Crown equivalent is pretty much the same price - £295 at Merrist Wood.

Silvermere may have a cheaper option.

I know there are a couple, maybe more, Clubs attached to Downshire as well - for exactly that reason.

Laleham and associated clubs has a 'tiered' membership plan too.

Would of thought £300 in Surrey is cheap?

It isn't bad for that type of membership in surrey. But it's still £300!

You could try Downshire, not far from you and I am fairly sure the subs are cheap as the club and the course aren't quite as integrated as Hoebridge.

It's £300 at a muni and then you get discount on your green fees. The more you play, the more the discount. When you reach what you would pay for the full annual subs it's free golf. It worked nicely for me until the place got too busy and the rounds too slow.

Pretty sure it is around £80 to joing Downshire or Easthampstead (although stand to be corrected) based at Downshire GC and then you pay green fee for each round (reduced) every time you play. I would have thought you could take your existing handicap with you without a problem but the issue may be getting three competition cards in during the year to keep it active or whatever they term it as these days if you only play a handful of times. This would seem to negate the change if you aren't going to maintain it

it doesn't need to be Surrey!

join the cheapest muni linked club anywhere in the country - your existing handicap goes with you and, although it will go non-(c) in due course unless you play 3 open Q events in the next year it won't actually lapse for as long as you pay your nominal subs, which include a local Golf Union fee etc

if you were only playing 3 times in the year you aren't going to miss the club's competition opportunities!

Dropped you a PM.. good to see someone from Hoebridge.

Would you consider 9 hole courses. There is Rokers (opposite Merrist wood) and Abbey Moor (in Ottershaw).. I believe both can help you retain your Congu HC. Worth a shout

Abbey Moor is £125 for the Congu+Reduced Green Fee membership.

While only a mile or so from me, I wouldn't recommend it. Downshire/Easthamstead is much, much better imo - from every aspect, though their Breakfast is suitably 'greasy spoon'! AM would need to be almost paying me before I would consider membership there.

Pine Ridge in Camberley might be perfect for you - pay the £35 for a "Just Play" card, then the £15 County Fee's and off you go! They have a few comps over various weekends you can enter and keep your handicap active.

You also get discount & advanced booking with the Just Play card.

Many thanks for that - just enquired at Rokers and its £90 for the year, never played there and it's only a 9 hole course but I think it should do the trick - cheers

I havent played AM in about 2 years. I hate the 4th hole P4. Everytime I played it, the middle bit would be a bog or have too many tractor marks and is virtually unplayable lie. Only reason for suggestion was due to the diesel's budget. Never played Downshire/Easthamstead, so cant comment
