Congratulations Mickelson

Yes on the day he produced the goods and deserved his victory. Feel gutted for Westwood - another great week for him but another one that he probably should've won.

Without taking anything away from big leftie and his awesome golf I've never witnessed a luckier golfer in my life. How you can go into the trees as often as he did and always get a shot, never mind a full escape shot to the green is beyond me!

He played great golf but boy were the golfing Gods in his favour!

Tiger has made a career out of wayward driving and having a shot to the green so don't begrudge a bit of luck to leftie.

The shot out of the Pine Needles (Sorry, but I can't bring myself to call it straw) to the 13th was nothing short of brilliant. He had luck that he had a shot but fortune favours the brave and that was a high tariff shot, a millimeter out and he would have ended up in the water. Got to admire the guys balls.

I think if there was any real rough at Augusta then the result would have been different. If he drove the ball like that at my place he would have been lucky to bag a 75 and if he does that in the US Open he will miss the cut. Augusta is an artificial golf course which does not offer the Pro's any real punishment for being wayward off th tee.

I don't disagree but I stand by my point, Tiger has done it for years. And it's not just Augusta that doesn't punish the pros.

On last seasons PGA Tour, Tiger was 85th in driving accuracy and 12th in GIR. John Senden was 80th in Driving Accuracy and 1st in GIR.

The Pro's aren't punished for wayward driving on the PGA tour in general so it's a little unfair to call Mickleson lucky at the Masters.

He played some great golf... don't forget his back to back eagles!

He did quite clearly know the course inside out though (years of practice), and i think that is the advantage that he had at the end of the day.

Gutted that Westwood didn't win as i had money on him at 16/1. I also had a few quid on Kim at 40/1 and thought he might have surprised everyone at one point last night. Not to be though.

That's the golf season of to a flyer with some great golf...

Crawford, you could have said the same thing about Seve back in his pomp  ;)

Just my 2 cents worth but regardless of the lucky break he had at 13 in the trees to actually have line of sight of the pin, but to actually pull that shot off from an unpredictable lie was class.

The story would have been totally different I reckon if Westwood had had a steady start but that's golf. Could of/should of/would of etc etc

Echo that, all if's and but's. What do they say.... "play the course as you find it" ? Mickelson did and better than all the others. Worthy winner, got up and down when he needed to. Westwood didn't, the rest were just too far back.

This may sound racist but I find him hard to watch, because he swings it the wrong way round, I toyed with the idea of using a mirror last night as it was obvious he would win.

I agree. The pros quite simply do not play on mickey mouse courses as they don't want to be made to look foolish... they only play on courses that are specifically set up to their requirements.... but we do like to see 350+yd drives don't we? So we can't have it all.

It would be quite interesting seeing Tiger going 6 feet off the back of a green and having to hit a recovery out of the prickles, watch him putt on bobbly crowned greens and play out of bunkers full of stones but I guess even that would get boring if that's all we ever saw.

(I'm picturing Tiger turning up for a round to find that the greens were hollowtined yesterday and they've been put off the front tees 'cos the back ones are a bit squishy after the rain) :D

Does anyone think he might not have gone for that shot had he been in a position where he couldn't afford to mess it up?

I reckon it was a calculated risk knowing he had a shot or two spare just in case.

Brilliant display altogether. Well done Phil :)

I remember a few months ago people criticising some pro's for taking 3-iron off the tee on some holes because a wayward driver would get them into too much trouble.

Now they're using driver because the punishment isn't as harsh for an iffy one and guess what???

Fickle lot aren't we :D :D :D

Well done to phil, The course however does not punish the wayward shot.
Take Tiger on the 1st, he almost hit it out of the state and still had a shot to the green. Westwood on the other hand hit it around 5 yds off line and didn't have a shot ???? I think the writing was on the wall.

Don't you think the US Open and USPGA have far more penal rough? The top players will always find a way to get it round. I agree some of the US courses are pretty easy but there are some tests too including Doral, Players Championship etc.

Lol - that reminds me. Laura Davies is playing at our place tomorrow in some society thing. Despite being a public course the greens are usually top class. However I played on Saturday, they had been hollowtined and not cut for a good few days. I'm dying to see how she gets on with them :)

Around those massive greens? :D

We have prickles... or OB fences, or roads. I'd rather play out of a bit of rough and have ball spotters.

Great short game but he will never win on a links course, that course is suited to him.
