Evening all,
Im slightly confused on a topic....As i asked in a previous post last month im changing my irons in the new year maybe before it.....i have decided on either the wilson staff Ci7's (U grooved) or wilson staff FG Tour irons (V grooved)
My question is should i bite the bullet now and go for the new grooves and learn to master them or should i go with the older clubs and wait 12 years until the rules for the average joe change..... Im sure im not the only one in this dilemma.

The rules might not even change for us mere mortals even in 14 years time.

And.. if you've still got the same clubs 14 years from now.... you're not addicted to shiny new things ;)

Buy the square grooved ones, why make things more difficult for yourself? Golf is hard enough.

On a similar note, I am thinking of ungrading to the new AP2 irons early next year.

Assuming the new versions have the new groves and the old versions the old groves but the new version is an improvement on the old version.

Which is the best option????

The one you hit best?

The theory is, that most of us hackers won't notice the difference. This is minimal from the fairway anyway (and who admits they play all their golf from the rough?), and we don't get a good enough connection from the rough to get any action anyway.

I wouldn't worry about the groove regs at all. You won't notice the difference. It is like worrying about your cars handling at 170 mph when it is a 1.1 litre diesel.

How often is the new version an improvement over the old version? I have my doubts.

I would switch to the v grooves. Whats the point using something that is illegal for the pros? :D I tried the new grooves (well, on a wedge that is about fifty years old) and there isn't a lot of difference when hitting in the rough. Some shots go a bit further but nothing extreme.
I heard that there is no difference between square and v grooves no their spin rates on clean lies because there isn't much grass for the square grooves to channel away.

Being honest off my handicap i dont think id actually be able to tell the difference so i suppose its 6 of one , half dozen of another..............
