Competitive handicaps.

This cropped up in discussion yesterday. When does a "c" handicap become inactive? Is it 12 months after ones last qualifying card? Or perhaps 12 months after the first of your last three (ie you now only have two qualifying cards in past 12 months). Or indeed, is it some other time?

And a supplimentary question. A player enters a knockout matchplay comp which requires a c handicap to enter. What happens if the c handicap expires before the player loses a match & gets knocked out. Can the player carry on, or is he eliminated?

Any idea about the entry to comps thing - eg our winter fourballs which start in October. Player could legitimately enter in October, still be in the comp by Jan, but then lose c status. Could they carry on? Or is it just down to whatever the conditions of competition say?

The status ('c' or ' ') itself does not bar players from entry into competitions.

I would have thought that as on entering the competition the player satisfied the conditions of entry then he/she should be allowed to stay in the competition until knocked out.

This was complicated when the reference date was changed:

"It is a requirement that 3 qualifying scores are returned per calendar year (scores returned between 1st March 2015 and 29th February 2016 will be used for the 2015 season, Scores returned from 1st March 2016 to 31st December 2016 will be used for the 2016 season). Scores returned in the previous year are not carried over."

So, to retain "c" status on 1/1/17 you needed 3 qualifiers in the last 10 months of 2016.

Yep it's caused me a few headaches and issues trying to explain it to a few people

Or by playing 3 Q's. Don't worry about it, the computer does the maths, thank heavens.

Supplementaries are processed in the same way as qualifiers. If you are better than SSS, then a reduction is on the cards, if you are outside buffer, it's 0.1 up

You would get cut to 6 at the most - as long as each card the supplementary card has been declared before going out to play.

Unless the conditions of comp specified that players had to maintain their handicap status for the duration of their participation in the competition.

The manual only mentions Qualifying Scores with no reference to an exception for Supplementary Scores.

Yes you can, but whether you may will be down the the individual clubs conditions of competition entry. Some require a (c) handicap for all comps, some for their designated trophy/board events and most combinations thereof

Quite a common approach.

We also have a club rule that new members are not allowed to win a board competition in their first year as a member
