Anyone else struggling in comps, I can't score in a comp to save my life Sunday was another showing of this level through the turn then a 9, 8 and a 10 it was all over, all of which were achieved on par 5's! Play comfortably to and below handicap in practise but in comps it all goes to pot! I've played about 5 or 6 comps now and not once have I played to handicap despite knowing I should be making progress the other way! Stupid sport haha!

common problem for most of us, put ourselves under pressure with greater expectations, forget to relax and enjoy. End up being tense and uptight not good for scoring well. I'd recommend you Try reading some rotella books.

Yep - I get very nervous and it affects me on the greens more than anywhere. If I can develop and improve one aspect of my game this season it will be to learn to play competitions with more fun, more freedom and even try to enjoy them!

I am pretty steady both in and out of comps, a good number of pars but card ruined by the occasional triple/and or quadruple bogey. todays practice 6 pars, 4 doubles and a quad. Its very frustrating.

You have to try to treat every round the same, comp or not. As a club golfer you are going to be inconsistent, there is nothing you can do, no matter how hard you try, to make yourself play well. At the end of the day, the worst you can do in a comp is get 0.1 back, it's not the end of the world.

It took me a long time to work this out, three and a half years to be precise.

Started off fine in the medal. Plus 2 gross after 4 (courtesy of a duffed chip causing a double bogey at 3) so still a shot up on handicap. Then went double, triple, bogey, bogey, triple to the turn. Swing went in a flash. Same in the stableford the week before where I came in with 26 points but felt like I hadn't actually hit the ball badly. I did chop it this weekend. The game has felt so close in both roll up and comp rounds for weeks so Sunday aside I am frustrated that I can't convert

I've played 3 medals this season and performed poorly. After Sundays 61 on the back 9 I've decided to take a break for a few weeks. I have a few things going on outside of golf to do to keep me occupied.

Going to hit the range a few times for a couple hours and work on my game as I know it's there somewhere. I think I'm just trying to play like a single figure golfer...

Going to the BMW's so going to see how they do it and will re read my rotella books.

We're handicap golfers for a reaason.

The other week I started of well, 4 pars so level gross, then went on to finish -2 net. Three trebles and 4 doubles did the damage.

I was cut in my first 2 medals which were played in glorious sunshine but, the last 2 medals were way off the mark and I have an issue with one particular hole now which I must get out of my head as it was never a problem before! The last 2 medals were in rain, hail & wind, think I don't like wetsuit and brolly golf!

So 2 cuts from 4 isn't drastic and if those odds stay, then I'll hopefully come down gradually as every minimum 0.4 cut I get I'll only go up 0.1 so 0.6 better now than at the start of the year but the card in the hand is definitely a factor as I shoot 6 under regularly in our Friday sweeps!

All our weekend medals and qualifiers are stroke play so very jealous of all the cuts I'm reading about playing stableford comps, we only have 1 stableford a month and its midweek :(

Just a suggestion .... Walk round with your mind set on a thought that your Fred Couples on each shot, you know, just like you were your favourite footballer when you were 10 years old. Daft as it sounds when I've done this it's amazing just how you relax and slow the swing and usually hit better shots!

I've been so near yet so far this season with 5 buffers, 2 x .3 cuts and two rises but I know it's there somewhere to get down a good few shots. I find its a lot easier said than done not thinking about your score but keep trying.

Fish - I think that any bad holes in medal play get reduced on a stableford basis to give a nett score for handicap purposes. (Please someone correct me if wrong as I told someone else that I thought this was the case the other day!)

Makes no difference, both are scored exactly the same way for handicap purposes so nothing to be jealous of. If you play your strokeplay medals with a stableford score in mind you'll do fine pal

I'll try that Martin, might be getting overly worried it being strokeplay. I can pull a blob back but get hung up with a silly big number if I have to play the hole out.

We dont have any stableford qualifiers at all and i can see where your coming from. It feels so much better and easier to move on from when you can pick up and go to next hole.

Whilst this is true for handicap purposes and I always believed Medal or Stableford made no difference psychologically I have changed my mind after playing one this season. Last club rarely had Stableford but current one has 50/50 to medals. I felt equally nervous for both types of comp as for me it's about my handicap BUT a playing partner had a number of putts "for 1" and I could sense how much freedom there was putting for 1 without any thought about the one back which she'd have in a medal.

So I now see why many on here feel Medal play is tougher for some players.
