Throughout the course of last year and this year when people have spoken about leaving they have been asked why - most common response is "too many comps at weekend"

Also many members over the same period have responded in the same way - they feel especially during the Summer months that there is too many comps ( especially again on Saturdays )

Also seen a number of new members this year not really that bothered about comps and just want to play social golf with their friends
So we have made a number of changes to allow more social golf at the weekends

So the question is

Does your club have too many comps ? Would you like more ? Or would you prefer more free Saturday's and Sunday's for social golf

Competitions every Saturday throughout the season for the men at ours but you can go out after them or on a Sunday.

We have it about right I think.

We have an hour for social golf between the tee times for medals, stablefords and other competitions. Some of the ladies use the time if they can not enter the comps, but not many others. We all play in the comps, hence the big fields. Summer competitions get up to 140 golfers playing on one day.

In the main summer season we have one monthly stableford and one monthly medal and then throughout the year other one offs, usually honour board events. These are varied across both days of weekends and so it never feels too much like competitive play and still time to enjoy a roll up social game

I think we have just about the right mix, from March till October most Saturdays we have stroke play medal comps, that can also be played on the Friday if you prefer .
We have 2 Saturday/ Sunday invitation comps, a couple of bogey and stableford comps plus 1 open Saturday comp.

The tee is normally free on Saturdays from 3pm for bounce games.
We have very few official comps on Sundays so you can just turn up and play.
We also have a weekly Tuesday medal from April through to October.

More comps please. For me, its sociable anyway. I don't get all tense or feel pressured during comps... its only a game.

People don't have to play comps do they...?
If there are 20 tee times given over to a comp and only 10 slots are filled, what happens to the other 10..?
The implication is that if people don't play the comp then they can't play....

Tee slots are full until midday normally

On a comp day the tee is reserved for the comp from 6:30 ( in summer ) until 2ish.

If the people don't want to play in comp they then must wait until the end of the booked tee times

I think we have it about right. In the summer months there are competitions most Saturdays (except for August which is a bit annoying). On most Sundays there is a Stableford Qualifier which is run alongside social golf, no tee reservation, can play in twos three or fours, and not everyone in the group needs to enter. Gents and Ladies in the same comp. Usually there are about 40 entries.

Fairly happy with ours, weekend comps are mix of Saturdays and Sundays and there are enough that I played 14 qualifiers in 8 months despite only being able to play once every 2 or 3 weeks. I'd personally prefer a few more comps but the balance isn't far off being right. There are probably around 25 weekend qualifying comps during the season which leaves the majority of weekend days with just club matches to fit around for a social knock.

At my old club there were more - there, they have a qualifier running across both days every weekend but no obligation to enter. So you always had the choice on the day of either a comp or a social round, which worked very well when I was able to play both days - social on Saturday as a warm-up, enter the comp on Sunday. Or if the forecast is awful for Sunday, make sure your card counts on Saturday! Some downsides to it though, for monthly medals or even most board comps, this didn't change - no blocked out times for the comp and no sign-up sheets, I do think that's wrong.

Happy with mine, works perfectly for me.

Comp every Saturday from March to October with only 1/2 free weekends. Very few stablefords aswell which is nice, maybe 2 all season.

Wouldn't like to see it drastically reduced, plenty opportunities for social golf in the summer months alongside the comps.

I love competition golf and the chance to reduce my handicap. Although we have a qualifying comp on all but one Saturday from April to October that is it. Midweek summer qualifiers would not attract enough players to make it viable

Voted "about right". With the monthly medal and other comps it works out about every other week. There's also a Pro shop comp if there isn't a club comp - but they are just casual entry so don't interfere with social golf.

That is a truly pathetic system......!!!!
So....if you don't want to enter the comp, you can't have a tee time....??

My club has a comp every Saturday and every Sunday from April through til end September, start of October, and on these days, you can book a tee time, choose to play the comp or not enter and just have a social knock
Every member has the same equal right to a tee time slot, to use as they wish

The idea of the tee being booked 630am til mid afternoon for comp use only is crazy
Who would join a course with that set up....??

On Saturdays at our Club the opportunities for non-competition play is very limited.

April to Oct only about four Sats without comps and these comps have the first tee from 7.00a.m to 2.00 -3.00p.m. dependent upon time of year.

Remainder of the year comps every Sat with booked first tee utilising all daylight.

Hence, after 32 years, I have reduced my membership to six day category.

Could be wrong but I'd guess that's the norm?

My place tee can be booked out til 3/3.30 every Saturday for the comp.

Got to agree with this, even though I nearly always play in the comp I wouldn't be happy being forced to when all I wanted was a social game especially in winter when I may or may not want to play the full 18 holes.

Certainly don't think its the norm over here in Ireland, have been a member at 3 different places both in the north and the South and it wasn't
