Would you like your club at weekends to have

The issue is currently we have about 40 - 50 active ladies playing comps whilst men is over 400

The comps are set out in direct relation to the make up of the club at the wishes of the members

If for example you joined the club and only played at weekends then a tee time would be made available at the weekend for you to play competition golf but the main competitions will be set out for the majority of the members both ladies and men and their wishes.

What else can clubs do ?

Phil, just answer the question. Would you like it if your comps were organised like that?

Any system introduced will alienate someone

What if someone can't enter the comp because the tee times are taken up by social golfers ?

What a load of tosh......!!
Our system alienates NOBODY
It's a level playing field
So what if player X wants to play 9am sat morn social golf and player Y wants to play 915am sat morn comp
They're treat as equals
They pay the same fees.......so they SHOULD be
Every member has a chance to book a tee time upto 9 days in advance with bookings opening at 7pm, 9 days ahead ( obviously )
So every member has the same opportunity as the next guy

Oh
And by the way
A social golfer is still a club member
So why do u try and differentiate

You really are so blinkered in your attitudes to anything that isn't, as YOU do, or not how it's always been.........you have a real failure to acknowledge anybody else's opinions and views on any topic.........you really need to open up, stop being such a "know it all" and accept not everybody is YOU.....!!

Honest answer is it wouldn't bother me as I will still play

Again what would you like clubs with that set up to do ?

They are trying to accommodate ladies who play during the week and also at the weekend ?

They are organising the comps to suit the majority

What are they supposed to do ?

Umm well sorry but it's the way our club works and has done for decades

Tee bookings are for comps only - social golf within those comps days allowed if tee is free from an booking

We do not have a tee booking system for social golf - people turn up and play when the tee is not booked out.

Everyone is treated as a "member" of the golf club regardless of how they play their golf and are all treated as an equal.

Seems a lot of clubs work the same way but some will work other way - neither is wrong just different.

It doesn't really feel much like a competition when you and maybe one or two others play a round of golf 5 days after everyone else played, in different conditions, when all the other scores have already been published. And it's not great when you shot the lights out on Tuesday and need to wait almost a week to find out if you won.

It comes down to whether or not, in the long term, we want to encourage women to play golf and to grow the ladies game. Too many golf clubs use the "it's always been like that" and yet wonder why they don't have more women playing.

I'd probably do something much more radical but here's a different compromise that, to my mind would be fairer; some comps midweek, some at the weekend.

We have midweek comps for the 5 day members

And the comps are set out by the demographic of our lady members

The comps are in Tuesday to suit them - they are the ones that organise them and they are the ones that run them.

You can only organise to the demographic of the club

And this is the nub of the problem. I'd rather do what could be done to grow the membership and get a younger demographic to play.

Anyway, sorry, this thread has gone waaaaay off topic.

If we are being honest here how many of the younger ladies are looking to play golf ?

Chicken and egg, offer a better experience at golf clubs and, over time, more will play. Won't happen overnight but will never happen at clubs that haven't changed for decades and have no intention of ever changing.

I like how my place does it.
Mens comp' every Wednesday & Saturday
Ladies every Tuesday & Thursday
Not sure about the Juniors
Sundays often feature a mixed or social type comp'
But there is still plenty of opportunity to get in some social golf as well.

This annoys me how people can't see this.

Clearly if you have a situation that only suits the elderly older lady, that is all you are going to attract. You can't hope that younger women will join that system, with the hope things will get better for them.

But things wont change while you keep saying "we have 50 women members and it suits them". Of course it suits them, that is why they have joined. You have to look at the women that haven't joined, and see why!!

Lots of clubs in this area have offered many schemes to get ladies into sport - including golf. Rightly or wrong golf isnt a sport that is very popular with ladies teens upwards to possibly late 50's

That's the sport as whole

Our club have tried to get more ladies into the club - but it's always the same type that join - their husband is already a member or they have retired. Get the odd few teenagers who play until university then leave.

It's Prob valid for all sports

The opportunity is there for the ladies - it's up to them to take it.

Exactly

I think, where as i personally would like more comps and more qualifiers, less 4BBB or 2 person comps, the club get it fairly right ,

Open comp every Tuesday usually booked out
Ladies Day on Thursday, usually not full any can play but Comp has priority
Saturday is split well mens comp , societies , ladies comp & members time for an hour if you just want to knock around
Sunday is mens comp day , usually booked solid til lunch but afternoon is fairly free if u wana play , buy comp has priority

It's not, Phil, at least not the same opportunity that exists for the gentlemen.

There are different issues, of course, but in my opinion it's not about trying some "scheme" to get women into golf. What's needed is a much more significant and permanent change to the way golf clubs treat women and then, in the long run, more will play.

Er ? The whole point being made is that the 'opportunity' currently on offer to working ladies in many clubs is not as attractive as the opportunities on offer to working men. Until that is remedied we cannot be sure there is not a latent demand unmet out there amongst the ladies.

For me the balance is just right as you can always find a tee time on a comp day for social golf. I don't tend to enter many comps due to my own reasons but would always made welcome etc.

My other half though rarely plays social golf as thee ladies seem to have comps on all the time. so in my opinion need to cut back a bit on that front :)

So can people give a plan to what golf clubs should do to try and attract a demographic of people who generally don't play the sport ?

If you want to attract people who work during the week to join your club you need to have a system that allows them to play golf, social and competitive, at the weekend. Not sure what's so hard to understand about that.
