Played yesterday at Richmond GC in Surrey. Weather was a bit "iffy" (little bit breezy with rain threatening all day).
Got to a par 5, wasn't swinging particularly well (now there's a surprise ).
Hit a so-so drive, topped my 5 wood second shot but still made a bit of progress, left myself about 135-140 to go, into a very light wind.
The ball was sitting up beautifully on the fairway, couldn't have wished for a better lie. For this sort of shot I would normally hit an "easy" 8 iron, but taking into account I wasn't striking the ball very cleanly I elected to take a 6 iron and just make a very easy swing, just trying to pop it onto the dancefloor to give myself a chance of par at least. I guess I was taking the easy way out if you like.
I clipped it well enough and left myself a makeable birdie putt. Although I just missed it and walked off with my 3 points for par I still felt a bit cheesed off because I didn't play the hole as well as I'd liked, especially that third shot.
So, common sense or a poofters shot?

Hmm, you made par so you can’t tell yourself anything other than well done. With a great lie that you describe I would have hit my 9 iron at the centre of the green, I think because you were not striking well you talked yourself out of the “right” shot. “Maybe” what you should have done was told yourself “I can make this shot all day long” but hey a par is a par.

Ye maybe a little bit of a poofters shot, you were not in trouble and changed your game plan. Bla bla golf 90% mental bla bla.

Clearly just my thoughts, I have been there and done that sort of thing many times, I think now though with the work I have been doing on my mental game I would have told myself I could make it.

As I say though, these comments are only said in the context of the question you asked.

No problem Al.
That's why I asked the question and appreciate that there are two sides to every coin mate.
I felt a little "flat" because as I say, although it was a par and scored me the points, I'd much rather have belted an 8 or 9 iron and stopped it stone dead next to the pin.
It's a shot I've managed to do countless times over the years....but I couldn't see myself doing it yesterday

I can totally understand your thinking. Maybe to get it out of your system you need to take your 6 iron down the range and hit 50 x 160 yard shots to make yourself feel better. I have no advice if they all go 135 yards :)

Total poof.

On the downhill slippery slope doing that. Next thing 130 will be your stock shot with a 6i, and you will only be playing par 3 courses and pitch and putts.

With a full set of clubs.

Leftie started like that. He used to be a monster off the tee. Now look at him.

Man up, and get the wedge out.

I'm surprised you can even hit your 6 that far wearing those troosers.
If you had a belly putter, you might have holed the birdie putt. :)
Am I right in thinking you got a par at a shot hole with no stress? :D

Percentage wise, for me, a 135 6i is a high risk shot. I haven't got a clue how to play that shot, without shanking it.

Put like that, it could be a brave choice.

I was wearing black chino's and putting with my Yes Tracy thank you very much Bob.
And yes, it was a shot hole but there was stress. Plenty of it. The drive was only "so so" (about 220) and my topped 5 wood only went about 150. Stress isn't the word.

I'll run through it with you the next time we meet up Murph and give you a few pointers. Just a little "punchy" shot, the type of knock the jocks use all the time around their windy links courses. Only it wasn't a links, and it wasn't windy.
It can be a hole saver, believe me.
And not a glimps of the Jodrells. Didn't even think of that
;)

You said you'd of normally spanked an 8 iron but chose a soft 6. Maybe a steady 7 iron would of been better on your conscience.
Saying that the outcome of a par you still made.

In fact smiffy, man up, grab your sand wedge and try and hit that there if it makes you feel more of a man! ;)

You'll be happy with the 6 iron after 100 balls on the range trying it with the sand wedge!!! :o

Well done on the par by the way :)
