Committee Members - what do they do?

Outside the main roles on a committee (Capt, v/Capt, Tres and Sec) what are the general duties of a committee member?
I am wondering if it is something i should nominate myself for.

Can you put up with people whinging? if so, put your name forward. If you can't I would stay clear of it....

Well I am pretty laid back so I think I could put up with it. But there must be more to it than a sounding board to whinging members.

unless your doing one of the core roles liaising with the membership base and acting as a link between them and the committee as well as voting on issues at meetings would be the main role in my experience.

It depends, we have a main committee and then sub-committees for clubhouse, grounds, juniors and competitions. It's normally down to a few stalwarts who end up doing all the graft but it seems to work ok with fairly little whinging. Most of the whinging comes from the members and the committees have to handle it.

Depends on what you are looking to put in. In my experience things like the greens committee tends to be captain and vice, head green keeper, handicap sec and one other. House committee which looks after the general running of the club tends to be captain/or vice if delegated, secretary, steward and two or three other members. Social committee tends to be steward, and then xxx number of members.

Most members don't realise the time and dedication a few hardy soles put in to make sure the course is as playable as possible and the clubhouse as wekk kept as budgets allow. Most just roll up, put their shoes on have their game and maybe stop for a quick drink once a week. It is usually only a hard core who use the club regularly and it tends to be those members that get involved partially because they have a finger on the pulse of what is going on day by day.

If you are prepared to put in some long hours with little thanks in return then joining a committee is a great way of getting involved in YOUR club.

pretty much the same as any other unpaid committee then; school governors (except LEA governors who are paid!), neighbourhood watch, scout group,estate etc
