committee member

i was at my home clubs agm today and was put forward for the committee,now the guy who put me forward was doing it as a laugh,he's a funny guy and likes to fool around but it was said that he hoped for committee members to be pro-active and i thought i wouldn't be such a good addition to the committee.

so i declined....

but as it stands there is still 3 positions to fill and i may consider it yet.

my question is,what is expected of a committee member?what do you have to do?

it was mentioned by a few that doing things such as helping out with opens etc and organising them etc but i'm sure there is more to it.i always have the attitude that i am there to play golf and thats it but tbh i'd like to do more,the more help they can get the better and i'd like to help out.

It's pretty time consuming Wull, but it gives you an insight into to how your club runs. It would also be refreshing to see a 'young gun' on board. Think it would depend on what was expected of you as a comm member, just remember that your hoping to get lower this season.

If you want to do it, then do it. Comps can be very busy, House not too bad at all, Social very easy. A lot depends on how well structured and staffed your committee is. A decent one would ease you, recognising you need to find your feet just as much as they need to find out your strength, weaknesses and commitment.

But once you are on committee be prepared to develop a thick skin and a stock answer, e.g. if someone comes to you moaning ask them to put it in writing. Off the cuff answers can bite you in the bum, so you need to be able to say something like, "I'll get back to you," or "that needs to be put before the full committee."

As others have said, it can take up some of your time and you do need to develop a thick skin, but it is a worthwhile experience and you get the satisfaction of helping your club move forward.

I guess it depends which committee you have been put forward for. Personally I'd take it up and get some experience from the inside into how the club is run and hopefully you can make a difference and move it forward.

i think for this year i'll give it a miss,maybe consider it next year but our club is a small club.i think thats why gordon put me forward because there isn't a great deal of people and tbh there isn't that many who show an interest.a lot of the people there today i have never seen before and i'm there all the time......maybe there to busy with the committee and other aspects of dealings with the club.

i really should concentrate on my golf this year and i don't mean that in a selfish way.
