Hi guys im looking to start saving over the summer for a good quality warm but not to bulky weather jacket and trousers, its my first winter in golf and i know the jackets cost a lot so want to save its not to much of a dent. any ideas guys also what trousers do you suggest for mucky days please lads any help would be great

use the jacket to stay dry, and keep out the wind - use other layers to control temperature.

the key is to get one the right size, and fit, for you - obviously taking into account they underlayers.

I use lined jumpers a lot to deal with wind and cold, but not when it's wet.

Hubby really rates the Dunlop winter trousers from Sports Direct. Think they're £7ish and unless it's really been lashing down he's not needed to put his waterproofs on. For jackets he has some Under Armour ones bought cheap from M and M.

Get yourself a decent Gore Tex suit and you'll have wind and rain protection.....The only other thing with Gore Tex is usually they are light....Now linings.....I wear Mountain bike leggings inside my Pants and i layer up inside the jacket.....Best of both worlds....

Right no worries, if you don't mind me asking how much are you looking to spend in total, just so I know what to recommend in the price bracket we are looking at.

i have no limit thats why i am saving i could go out and buy now really but want to have a good few hundred to spend and not worry about it. also are there trousers you can wear that are maybe not waterproof but winter type for muck because my ping trousers are getting muddy around the ankles big time

O.k then. If you go down the waterproof only route then in my opinion Galvin Green are the best. Some on here say others are as good but I have had loads of other brands and I reckon their stuff is the best. For winter you want the Alf model trouser which has a lining in it and it made of thicker material than their paclite versions. The jackets are personal choice for colour and style but get the performence shell versions not the paclite. Windproof again Galvin do a great range but it is seriously expensive but if you can stretch to it then go for it as it is a good as anything out there. Footjoy also do a good all round range. I personally when playing in poor weather wear GG waterproofs and a footjoy lined sweater underneath

so the alf model trouser can be used as a stand alone pair of water proofs instead of over trousers?

Yes mate it can. On the coldest of cold days whether you would be warm enough I am not sure but this applies to all models and brands. The Alf trouser can be bought for anywhere between £185 to £130ish if you buy from Ebay. I paid £160 for mine 2 years ago and have not had 1 problem with them. Other thing with GG is that you get a lifetime guarantee so if the waterproofing fails then send them back and they swap them for you FOC. No other brand does this as far as I know

I think GG are seriously over priced. My preference would be for FJ. Their tour collection is superb and has handled everything this Winter and Spring has thrown at me with ease and would leave a few sheckles for lessons or other gear

cheers mate i hate wearing overtrousers

Me too but sometimes there is no other option. As I say the GG are expensive but makes me buy their stuff is the lifetime guarantee so you effectively only ever going to need 1 pair unless you rip them of course. You could pay half of a GG item say £80 but if the waterproofing fails after a few seasons you will be buying again, no saying it will but that extra piece of mind is what persuades me to buy their stuff as well as the style and quality of it.

Galvin Green are undoubtably the best but very pricey.

For me I would look no further than Under Armour, the cold gear range is brilliant and no need for bulky layers.

I have a few pairs of trousers and 1/4 zip tops that are wind proof, shower proof and keep you very warm and they are a fraction of the cost of Galvin Green.
