If you're grinding your, er, own beans, make sure you have a decent set of step ladders and an ambulance on speed dial:eek:

I have been to people that have stupidly expensive coffee machines, and yes with the right beans the coffee has been excellent. But then after a couple of grand for the machine, and then anywhere between £20 and £100 for a bag of beans I would expect it. I would stick with the Tassimo TBH, and perhaps try some of the different types they do. That's what I did to find my Tassimo favourite. You do need to go to the Tassimo website and order from there, because most of them aren't available in the shops.

Any good bean recommendations would be appreciated. Inherited a very good bean to cup machine when my dad passed and have only been using big standard Lavazza

Bought a delonghi magnifica a few years ago. Took vacuum in for a repair and mentioned does he sell coffee machines, he didn't but I said " there's a guy I have seen sells they on eBay". They were a good bit cheaper then retail, but obviously returns. Guy in shop, who is a cousin 3 X removed or whatever on wife's side said "yes I know him he is at Hucknall, and am going over on Thursday". I gave him two delonghi makes and asked to get a price. Three days later he rings me back and said " the dearer one he would not sell me coz they are Rammel and always breaking down". Bought the other and it was a steal. Does beans and ground and it is fantastic.

Awful substance unless it's in beer, in which case it is often stunning!

Until I bought the delonghi I could not remember the last time I had an instant coffee in this country.

Now let's get this right a cuppa tea aka Rosie Lee is king but when I am abroad. Proper coffee is king.

I dont have room in the kitchen for a big grinder and other kit.

I use a knock hand grinder - http://www.madebyknock.com/handgrind-grinders.html. Proper burrs, which is very important. Don't waste time on a cheap grinder. Grind on this can be adjusted for all sorts of coffee - different methods require different coarseness.

I use a moka pot for strong. or french press for long.

If I need a latte, steam milk using a stovetop steamer. Don't bother with a mechanical one, steam gives better texture and the high temps work on the sugars in the milk to give a nicer flavour.

Get beans from a place in town which roasts their own. Or Waitrose.

I have a bialetti mokka. Can't remember where from, but pretty widely available. Lots of other mokka pots also available. Go to somewhere like coffeegeeks and drive yourself mad!

I'll save you my backstory but I recommend you look into something called an AeroPress. They look gimmicky but are far from it, they make the best cup of coffee I've been able to make at home, in the office, or on my travels. I use hasbean.co.uk for all my supplies (no connection, they are just the best) and, honestly, the AeroPress has completely revolutionised how I appreciate coffee.

Get one of those, a decent hand grinder, freshly roasted beans and prepare to be astonished at how poor over-the-counter coffee really is.

Thanks Jim going to have a look now, and bean recs?

Tricky to recommend as beans are obviously seasonal so it's a matter of trial and finding ones you like. But on the whole, I like Bourbon beans and in particular the ones from farms in El Salvador are a favourite. You really couldn't go wrong with some of these.

Explore, taste, enjoy! That's part of the fun for me, the difference in flavour between regions, beans, farms and their seasons is amazing.
