Anyone had a bash yet, if so what did you think?
Just had a quick go on the 4 and 5 iron at AG, at address it's strange looking at what appears to be a 7 iron, but you know it will go further. Hit the ball like a total balloon head so it's hard to judge, really not sure what to make of them, I love the idea but it's maybe too much of a gamble for some people.
I'd definitely recommend a hit with them though, if nothing else for a laugh 😁

Getting to try out a full set tomorrow night. Really like the concept so keen to see the reality. Like the idea of longer wedges as am v tall so a 60 wedge looks like a kids club on me!

Come on Martyn, buy them. Then I can buy them off you in a year's time when you realise you are too good for a one length set 😂. I'll buy them off you for a £100. Deal?

They appeal hugely to me but can't warrant them new. I need some failed experiments to happen.

Ive been toying with idea of making up the Wishon Sterlings for myself and trying them out, but I love my 575s too much and would dread to think the single length goes really well, plus I'm a blade lover.

Tried the 5, 7 and PW at my local range last week. Found the PW very hard to get my head around in terms of playing it from a 7 iron position and seeming so far away from the ball and couldn't see how you'd play touch shots or chips with it aside from gripping right down towards the shaft. Distance wise, they weren't too far off my current I25's but a bit wild with them which I'm putting down to doing it at the end of a large bucket of balls and being tired and wanting my dinner

All of the reviews I watched / read basically said that the gapping between the PW-7 iron was good. But when you get to the longer irons it's hard to get the distance you're used to as you can't generate enough clubhead speed due to the shorter shaft.

Funny enough, it was the 5 iron that was perhaps marginally longer, possibly as I swung it smoother as it was a 7 iron in my head which is exactly what the logic is. It was the short irons I think would be the issue for me and the feeling the shaft is too long for the shot at hand

Goes with what I found on the lauch monitor, couldn't get the 4 or 5 iron past 160, I'd expect better numbers from my regular clubs. It's why I need another go, they felt so easy to hit but I literally walked in off the street and barely caught one flush.

That makes sense. I think I'd feel the same way if I ever tried them. Must be strange looking at a PW loft on a 7 iron shaft!

Where the theory falls down for me is the driver, fw, etc are different lengths so you are still making the adjustment for these.

Can't get my head around the idea of these clubs. Part of what enables you to launch long irons is clubhead speed and that can be directly related to club length giving you that speed. So shortening a 3i will surely not generate the speed needed to launch it and vice versa too much swing speed in PW making it harder to control. If these where a good idea then surely TM and Callaway would have jumped on it by now.

I'd like to see some stats on clubhead speed of the 7i and 4i surely they are only 1 1/2 difference between them, can't be much mph. Where I think the set falls down is in the wedges.

I not sure how Cobra design their irons, but from the Wishon Sterling SLCs all the clubs are exactly same head weight 274g, total club weight, swing weight and lie angle. The only difference is that the 7-5 irons have a hi COR face design compared to the rest of the irons that have cast carbon steel and the 5* loft differential will give you your gapping with the same swing speed. The irons are 36.5" long (normal 8i length or it can be a 7i length) that you don't increase your club head speed on your higher lofted clubs which would increase distances.

I enjoyed them in longer shots and in that area they are good and feel lovely off the face. My issue would be trying to play something like a chip and run from 15-20 yards off a green with a 9 iron or PW, even gripping down to the end of the standard length grip. I would still feel too far away from the ball. Not sure how you get around that

Play it with your standard length gap wedge.

I know the brainy guy on tour uses them to reasonably good effect but having seen this theory way back in the 80s not take off is there really mileage in revisiting same length clubs again?
I'm too long in the tooth to bother but for next generation will they really improve peoples games - surely if it was definitively gains making all the tour pros would be at it by now, yet they're not?
Fad methinks.
